The Octopus Project

The Octopus Project Announces February Tour, Commences Recording of New Album with Stephen Malkmus and The Gossip Producer Ryan Hadlock. Band To Perform The House of Apples & Eyeballs With Black Moth Super Rainbow at SXSW.

“With its dizzying array of beats, breaks and instrumental breadth, The House of Apples & Eyeballs is Lemon Jelly thumb-wrestling Tortoise, Boards of Canada getting humped by Need New Body, Fiery Furnaces going to space camp with roommate Aphex Twin. In other words, it's a highly original sound that defies easy categorization. Innovative instrumental music to be celebrated.” – Prefixmag.com

After receiving praise from Remix, Magazine, XLR8R, Nylon, and Filter for its 2005 release One Ten Hundred Thousand Million and being named one of the top acts at South-by-Southwest by Rolling Stone, The Octopus Project will hit the studio this February to record its next full-length album at Bear Creek Studio in Seattle.

This time around, the band will receive the help of producer Ryan Hadlock who has previously worked with the likes of Stephen Malkmus, The Gossip, Blonde Redhead, and The Album Leaf among others. The Octopus Project will be hitting up all the major cities and hotspots on its way up to Seattle during its west coast tour in February (see below for tour dates). The Octopus Project will be busy in the studio for a solid three weeks, at which point the band return to its hometown of Austin, TX to perform music from its current collaborative album The House of Apples & Eyeballs with Pittsburgh’s Black Moth Super Rainbow. This special performance at the Fanatic Promotion showcase on March 17th at Elysium will be a one-time only event not to be missed.

Black Moth Super Rainbow has an exciting year ahead of it as well. The band’s third full-length album, Dandelion Gum, will hit shelves in the spring via an exclusive distribution deal with its label Graveface Records and Chicago’s Southern Records. Black Moth Super Rainbow has shared stages with respected bands such as Of Montreal and The Black Angels and will headline its own tour upon the release of Dandelion Gum. New Yorkers can catch the band live at The Mercury Lounge on February 10th. The band’s collaborative album with The Octopus Project recently debuted on the CMJ Top 200 at #22, a full 22 spots higher than the peak position of the last full-length by The Octopus Project. An impressive feat for a band making its first foray into the college radio landscape.

About The House of Apples & Eyeballs:

The House of Apples & Eyeballs is not a split, but a full-length collaboration by The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow. Shortly after hearing (and loving!) each other's music late last year, the idea of a collaborative record came up. Immediately recognizing the potential of crossing their very different, yet somehow kindred musical streams, they set out to create one of the wilder pop records of the year. While a couple of tracks did make it to the record in their original one-band form, most were passed back and forth from Austin to Pittsburgh for several rounds of dismemberment, rearrangement, and augmentation. The result overflows with sonic treats: cut-up beats and Vocoder melodies collide with huge, distorted riffs. A Theremin orchestra descends into layered steel guitars before all is dissolved in a wash of hazy synths. Both bands say The House of Apples & Eyeballs sounds like nothing either band could have done on its own, but both are deliriously happy with the results of their teamwork.

About The Octopus Project and Black Moth Super Rainbow:

Previously, The Octopus Project has been fortunate to share the stage with artists such as Four Tet, The Shins, Deerhoof, The Dismemberment Plan, and …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. The Austin-based group wowed audiences at the 2006 Coachella Festival after winning a spot on the bill in a MySpace contest that they didn’t know they had been entered in.

Black Moth Super Rainbow has been known to turn childhood memories into songs and the band feels more at home playing music in the woods or an old barn than an electro club. The group’s Tom Fec says he’s influenced by “the Flowers of Evil record, Borf, gum, the song version of ‘Freebird’, Longmont Potion Castle, musicians like Led Zeppelin when they were in search of the greatest riff, Boards of Canada and Odd Nosdam.”
