Tom Waits' Approved Nz Band Coming To Uk

Fronted by pixie-like singer Kirsten Morrell, New Zealand's Goldenhorse are about to release their debut UK album.

The band's self titled UK album is an amalgamation of their first two multi-platinum selling records back home; 2002's 'Riverhead' took a record 52 weeks to reach the top of the album chart, but stayed there for seven weeks.

The band's follow up album, 2005's 'Out Of The Moon' went straight in at #2 and spawned the Tom Waits' approved single 'Maybe Tomorrow'.

The song, the next UK release, written by Goldenhorse guitarist Geoff Maddock, was an 'Honorably Mentioned' finallist at the 2005 International Songwriter's Competition, where the voting panel included great songwriting talents Tom Waits, Loretta Lyn and Steve Vai.

The jangly bitter-sweet pop lyrics of 'Maybe Tomorrow' were picked out of 80,000 songs to grab the judge's attentions.

Comparisons on music sites around the world say that Morrell's vocals are akin to Bjork, PJ Harvey and Bic Runga.

Goldenhorse are due to announce some new shows in the UK for the Spring.

Goldenhorse's self-titled debut is out on February 5. The single is available from January 29. Both through 7Hz Recordings and iTunes.

Ugh, I fucking hate Goldenhorse. Why couldn't another band get a record deal?

Goldenhorse are ok, I like some of their stuff. But you know. Don't get too excited, UK.

I hate to split hairs, but isn't Maybe Tomorrow off their first record?
And: uh, blandy. They just about manage nice, but I am sure a large part of the reason for their success is because
a) you have to like NZ music at the moment or you're not patriotic and
b) the improvement from Breast Secreting Cake to Goldenhorse is, in relative terms, the biggest improvement ever! And you have to be impressed by that.

I am a little disappointed that there was no mention made of the many years the band's rump (the non-hot ones) spent as Breast Secreting Cake (or later, Bressa Creeting Cake). For shame.
