Grinderman Nick Cave and three members of his
Bad Seeds have formed a new band called
Grinderman, who will release their self-titled debut on April 10.
Cave (vocals, electric guitar, organ, piano),
Warren Ellis (electric bouzouki, Fendocaster, violin, viola, acoustic guitar, backing vocals),
Martyn Casey (bass, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) and
Jim Sclavunos (drums, percussion, backing vocals) recorded 13 songs with Australian producer
Nick Launay (Bad Seeds,
Midnight Oil,
INXS) in a week in London, England's RAK studios last April. The Anti- album was mixed last fall at London's Metropolis Studios.
"Launay gets good sounds down," says Ellis. "We didn't want any obstacles between the band sound and the production, so Launay was perfect."
You can get an early taste of Grinderman, which sounds more aggressive than Cave's recent work with the Bad Seeds, on the band's
MySpace page. The songs "Get It On" and "No Pussy Blues" can be downloaded there, while 1,000 numbered seven-inch copies of the former will be released on Feb. 8. The single, featuring "Get It On" on one side and a vinyl etching by Cave on the other, will also feature cover artwork by the frontman.
Cave and The Bad Seeds will release a
live two-DVD set titled The Abattoir Blues Tour on Jan. 29.
