what does it really mean to sing?

Like, I was listening to Maria Callas and her amazing voice and whatever and I just made a comparison between classical music and pop music. Some people don't consider pop music to me "music". Classical people sometimes look down on it.

Is that valid?? what does it mean to be a singer?? Is Madonna less of a singer than Callas?? or is it debatable?? can you say they are equally singers and they can't be compared because they are different??

is pop music trully MUSIC??

I think that when classical music fans look down on pop music, it's because classical music is a lot more complicated than pop music. Classical music is generally pretty motific, while pop music is pretty "tune"-ish.

I wouldn't compare Madonna to a classical singer, because it's like comparing apples and oranges. FUTILE. But I would say there are a number of pop singers that are far more talented than Madonna in the vocal department. I think Madonna has even said that she's not the best singer. That doesn't make her music garbage though...or at least not in my opinion.

I think that diehard classical fans can be real snobs sometimes, and the dismissal of all pop music is probably part of that. Most of the music that I listen to on a daily basis is not popular, but it shares a fuck of a lot more with pop music than it does with classical music.

Um...have you ever even listened to classical music?

Pop songs have really, really simple composition and structure. Even stuff that is 'rock' music and is not popular generally has really simple composition and structure.

On the other hand, if you listen to something like Mahler (or any other classical composer), you are going to hear composition that is a lot more complicated. It's going to start with some kind of idea and it's going to grow and flower out from that point on...and sometimes it gets insanely elaborate in ways that pop music virtually never does.

Which isn't to say that pop music is worse...or that the people that make it are stupid, or anything else. It just is what it is. And classical is what it is too.
