| Lily Allen & Mark Ronson - North American Debut Review Lily Allen performed tonight in Toronto, her first show across the pond, brought along UK dj Mark Ronson.
.........
holy shiiiiiiiiiit.
that was maybe on of the 10 best concerts ive ever seen in Toronto, out of a few hundered. took me by total surprise. so forgive me if I drag on a bit about describing it but it was an insanely good show...
her first show ever over in North America and Lily just killed it. Had only heard Smile going into this, but she is really good performer live ive, comes out in a big shiney dress, busting out little dance moves and stuff just pure mischevious charming as fuck sex appeal with her, amazing voice live, wicked lyrical flow, tons of stage presence. One song was the best, think it was Knock Em Out, end the tune band half, she crouches down and just shouts out "And no, you can’t have my number, cos I lost my phone!!" and punches the air...end of song, and the audience went fucking insane.
She was definitely confident by the 2nd half, at first she seemed a bit nervous because the crowd just really enthusiastic and rowdy and appreciative, which really doesnt always happen in Toronto, especially for someones first show. Can't recall an audience in a small or big venue being as excited and amped up as tonight. Just watching her by the end she basically had the showmanship and totally crowd pwnage of someone who has been doing this a long time, but she's only 21...its nuts. Can't really describe specfic tunes I'm pretty sure she played everything off the album because the set wasnt too long. If you took the best elements of The Streets, Bob Marley, Lady Sovereign, No Doubt, Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keys, 80's Madonna....and put it in a sound blender, that was Lily Allen on stage. If she isnt in front of crowds of thousands here, in the next couple of years, I'll be pretty surprised.
------------
But when she came on it was almost hard to imagining topping Mark Ronson's opening set. Got in there early to see some other guy spinning...pretty much crap, we popped outside for a bit and came back in to see Mark Ronson starting up. The only thing I had heard is that he's known as one of these celebrity party kind of LA dj's doing mashups, etc (like...DJ AM) but fuck...the mixing skill that he had (think he was using serato) and the track selection was just seriously sick. Mixes and tracks I really couldnt imagine him pulling off and he did. The Strokes, Jackson Five, Radiohead Just remix, Smells Like Teen Spirit mixed with a wicked lyrical fiya by Lupe Fiasco, Blur, Kelis, Daft Punk, the Toxic remix and Coldplay and Nas. He was pulling out lots of I well-known tunes but it all good shit, tunes that are worth spinning and worth throwing out to an energetic crowd. He was constantly tweaking the tunes, doing some pretty good scratching in between. It was fucking impressive and they timed it well that he spun and then a minute later Lily came on. If this guy has a bunch of hype behind as being able to stir up a big club, I can see why. Hope someone, anyone books him to come back.
yep, if you werent there.....you missed out motherfuckers on this one, trust me. Razz was kind of reluctant to go because I knew basically nothing about either of them, but the show...especially like first show of the tour and her career over here got off to a perfect start Both of them had total confidence, talent, and good moods and the crowd left that place ecfuckingstatic.
what kind of blew, was after Lilly was done, Ronson and the other DJ...although they were going to do spin some afterparty at Social, they said they would stick around and spin for people who wanted to stick around. And surprisingly like 80% of the fuckers split, and the other handful of people still on the dancefloor had the rhythm or a 7 week old giraffe with tourettes. Or they just stood there kind of shuffling their arms like shy kids at a junior high school dance, it was great. I guess they arent used to dancing instead of just bopping their heads. Ahh...but me and my friend Melissa stuck around until the other DJ started spinning shite. Looking like the token ravers in the place, it was an amusing end to the show. Now I'm a fucking wicked mood. |
