New Mars Volta CD: Amputechture

This album is incredible. It's as good as their last two. I don't know how a band can continue to inovate after three albums especially in an age where music is so bland and sounds exactly the same.

John Frusciante plays on every track I believe and has backing vocals. I'm still trying to digest the album.

It sounds like the Stooges, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Miles Davis, Defunkt, and Jeff Buckley all got on stage created amazing music together.

im really into the fact they've asked frusciante to appear. out of all the mega star artists they could've added john is a happy medium for me. i liked his solo album and all his backing harmonics/vocals with the chillies are great.

cant wait to hear this one.

This album came with pretty high expectations. Really, i find it disappointing. This could be soooo much better with just some few more day of mixing. For examples are all the themes that are just glued together like in tentagrammaton where the music stop only for a millisecond then starts with a totaly different theme.

Second, i think much of the songs just sound like guitar tunes in a random order accompanied by independent bass and vocal lines. Mars Volta has done this a lot of times before but in this album there was waaaay to much.

And mainly. I HATE HATE HATE HATE THE FUCKING END OF THE ALBUM. THEY COULD HAVE DONE ANYANYANY FUCKING THING BUT JUST PRESSING THE MUTE BUTTON AND ENDING IT LIKE THAT. AARGGGG..

But i do enjoy Vicarious Atonement, Viscera Eyes and Tentagrammaton

OMG, I didnt think they could do it twice, but they proved me wrong!

Well The Mars Volta have done it again!!!

First they made Frances the Mute....this incredibly obnoxious, directionless, self indulgent mess, and now they have made an even worse record with Amputechture.

On De-loused in the Comatorium, they made tunes that sounded like a next step from At the Drive In, great goddamn songs that incorporated Cedric's abrassive but compelling vocals and Omar's wicked riffs and arrangements. Go and listen to a song as brilliant and fierce as Eriakarta, and now listen to the boring fucking musical jerking off that is the new album, IT IS BAD.

Now....they dont sound like the same band, I'm officially turning in my fan badge because they best music they made was Relationship of Command and De-Loused.

It sounds like a quasi prog wannabe jam session, thats it. At least with Frances the Mute, they would have this needlessly long 17 minute songs, but somewhere in that messy, hazzy 17 minutes would be like 4 really good minutes. I've listened to Amputechture 5 times, and I'm not really seeing anything compelling here. I hear a pretentious as fuck record, I hear them going out of their way to try and be unconventional with awful results.

Those two guys made 2 absolutely great albums, but now....they are a directionless mess. It's almost as if you went up to Omar and John and said, replay the guitar parts on the album, right now, they would have no idea, because the albums sounds like some long inane jam session with Cedric occasionally warbling in over the haze and guitars and glitch sounds.

Worst Album of 2006 for a Respectable Band.

Im just mentioning that De-Loused acutally was "tunes that was one step from AT The drive-in" since it was their first release under the name Mars Volta (if you dont count Tremulant). An then came Frances The Mute whitch you described pretty much the same way as Amputechutre. So it actually is a pretty linear progress.

I could not disagree with some of you more! Sorry!

Having properly listened to the album a few times now, it seems a perfect progression for the band, and in some ways makes me feel as though they are still finding their feet. It's pushing their audience, making us find something different from them. For me I found that the entirety of track 5 (or section 5 because you don't really have a track with a mars volta record.) made me acknowledge a side to the band that I hadn't really acknowledged.

Also according to their website it was curated in a different way to usual, which might explain the discomfort some people are having with the record;
'The resultant Amputechture, the third album by The Mars Volta, marks the first time Omar and Cedric have created a work without a single unifying narrative. The essential creative process remained the same: Omar creating the music (including the horn sections) for Cedric to lyricize—but this time with the freedom to document unrelated stories, vignettes, inside jokes, various people, events memories… All in all, Cedric likens the experience alternately to the compartmentalized episodes of Rod Serling’s NIGHT GALLERY or the disparate plotlines of David Lynch’s TWIN PEAKS: Storylines not necessarily linear or in any way connected, but all told in the same voice.'

It makes me feel like I'm on a journey, like I'm travelling around the world. It's a very culturally visual album to me. I can't describe that without feeling lame, but it's a very vibrant and alive record.

I think that they're always going to be an 'awkward' band. And with all the generic trash that's being put out it's refreshing to see a record that might be them musically jerking off, but at least it has some soul to it. Their records make me feel the same way I did when I first heard 'Rain dogs' by Tom Waits; it's something different and something good.
