Girl Talk’s Gregg Gillis Entertains Paris Hilton, 50 Cent, LL Cool J, and Cee-Lo at Blender Magazine’s MTV Video Music Awards After Party; Works on Remixes for Beck, Teddybears and Others; Announces More Tour Dates.
Girl Talk rocked out in front of a star-packed audience at NYC's swanky Asian restaurant Tao as part of the post-MTV Video Music Awards festivities on August 31st. The line to get into Blender Magazine’s evening hosted by 50 Cent and LL Cool J wrapped around the block. In addition to the madness of Girl Talk’s Gregg Gillis, Cee-Lo was on hand to perform a few Gnarls Barkley songs and members of G-Unit, snowboarding gold medalist Shaun White, and several Wayans brothers all came out to shake their asses with the masses.
In all, Gillis had quite the jetsetter weekend, as he had just returned from playing a sold out show in London with Beck who recently commissioned a couple of remixes of his song “Cell Phone’s Dead” from the Pittsburgh boy wonder, one using original instruments and one with samples. Gillis is also scheduled to remix Iggy Pop collaborators Teddybears, Wichita Records' Swedes Peter Bjorn and John, and Warp Records' Grizzly Bear as well.
Of course, Gillis closed the UK show with his very special cover of Nirvana’s “Scentless Apprentice”, which the fine folks at Pitchfork were so nice to post a version of from the recent Girl Talk show in Chicago. Most folks are shocked when Gillis whips out this awesome cover, and even more shocking is the fact that this sample-heavy dude actually doesn’t sample all the time – quite a bit of Night Ripper is actually the artist’s own creation. Take that copyright lawyers!
As Gillis starts to appear world-famous, reality sets in. Gillis remains a biomedical engineer by day, which actually helps him make his music.
He explains, “It's funny because I use minimal software to make my music - a .wav editor and a calculator for my beats to make sure everything falls on mathematical precision. If you were just mapping this out visually, it works by math. I guess it's slightly engineering influenced.”
Hey, it all adds up. Paris Hilton loves math.
