Former Tripping Daisy Guitarist Tours With Polyphonic Spree; Releases Solo Album Pleasesuite on Spree Leader Tim DeLaughter’s Label, Good Recordings.
“It was a magical, one-time only experience which I think still lives and breathes within everyone involved,” says Phillip E. Karnats about playing in his former band, Tripping Daisy. “I'm not one to get too wishy washy... I take that back, yes I am... It was really a collective passion for pushing the envelope which has grown and evolved into some great things.”
After Tripping Daisy’s demise, leader Tim DeLaughter went on to form The Polyphonic Spree. Karnats and DeLaughter have continued to work together though, with Karnats playing on the Spree's recent album Together We're Heavy, and signing to DeLaughter's Dallas-based label imprint Good Recordings to release his solo debut Pleasesuite. Karnats will also open some select Spree shows in the next week.
Pleasesuite was recorded at home in Chicago. The 14-song cycle reflects on just how stir-crazy and erratic a night owl can become while making music and residing in a single dark, cold room. “I am a sucker for concept,” says Karnats.
Emotional extremes abound throughout the record, such as on the trip-hop-rock song “Too Much to Chew,” written about the passing of Karnats' mother. “I sat in a room the day after my mother died and recorded this,” he says solemnly. On the other side of the spectrum is the summer pop gem “Early Bird Cartoons,” which Karnats wrote and recorded in a single afternoon.
Pleasesuite is an obsessive creation that holds together pieces of art rock, guitar rock, glam rock, electronica and power pop - the magic lives on.
