| | | Bikini Kill: numb cunts, but great band Their second album (Pussywhipped) is my favorite, mostly because the lyrics get lost in the noise, and I can pretend they're actually outraged, as opposed to a bunch of bored college girls.
The third one (Reject All American) is pretty boring. It's relatively mellow and they get all faux academic.
The first one has its moments. Lots of their activist bullshit, but at least it's funny and sounds good.
Some of the dumber stuff:
From the song "Liar": "eat meat, hate blacks, beat your fucking wife, it's all the same thing"
PC douche bags like Kathleen tend to make out straight white guys are responsible for all the bad shit in the world, with the victimized minorities hand in hand, coping the best they can.
Because no black guy eats meat or beats his wife. Anybody who thinks so is a racist.
Next song is "White Boy": This is about white guys and their "culture" of rape and violence towards women.
It's important that "white" is clarified, as rape doesn't exist in any other race. Or maybe it does, but it's only bad being raped by a WASP. It's so 1980's/American Psycho.
She sings: "I'm so sorry if I'm alienating some of you/ Your whole fucking culture alienates me."
So if she can get away with that, so can I....
These girls are fucking morons. They aren't interested in solutions or seeing the world the way it is...They just want to be heard saying the right things. Right as in the trendy, PC shit that goes over well on campus. Which is sadly the basis of most feminist "thought" anyway. |

| | | i couldn't even listen to bikini kill for a long time because of most of their lyrics. even when i was 14 i thought they were too angsty and rediculous. they seemed kind of hypocritical to me, too. |

| i mostly agree with what you're saying (that meat/blacks/beat wife line is always hysterical), but i always felt that the quoted line above had a somewhat salient point |

I think the riot grrl culture really sprung from that, speaking out against this sexism, racism, and a culture that really makes a lot of people feel fucking abnormal for who they are. No, rape and abuse don't exist solely in a "white" culture but I'm just thinking of all the times in history when black men where blamed (without substantial evidence) for raping white women. So to turn that on it's head and be like yeah, white men are also raping and abusing and aren't generally called out on it. And I have to wonder if that line about meat/blacks/whatever isn't meant to be intentionally a funny line. I really don't think they're as hardcore and bitchy as everyone makes them out to be.
Secondly, you are ragging on these girls and their philosophy but they haven't been together in a band for 8 years. I mean you can argue that their music stands through time and it will be represent them forever, but I think these girls were all about yeah we're human, we don't agree all the time with each other, and we're obviously grow up and change our minds like anybody. I guess people call that hypocritical but I feel that's the human experience. I mean when I started learning about feminism I found a lot of great and was hardcore pc and was like god everything is sexist and racist and sucks. But you learn that's society and figure out a way to make your own path and relax.
Sorry, I totally ranted and talked but I'm not in college classes anymore so I can't discuss stuff like this for an hour everyday with classmates!! | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
