New- but long term lurker

I used to post on hole.com/early kittyradio back in the day. Won't disclose my old username cos I was an angry teen and a bit of a dick... no longer an angry teen, but still sometimes a dick.

Have been lurking around here for a few months (mainly as a procrastination method).

I live in London, but am from Yorkshire. I'm working on a PhD in Literature (Derek Walcott)- and also teach U.S. and Caribbean Literature to undergraduate students.

Needless to say, was a courtneytard, and still can't quite give up the part of me that had posters of her on my bedroom wall, despite...well... everyone knows.

Otherwise- like the same music as most people here.
love French film and 70's Hollywood stuff.
Gay- skinny- sexiness receding with the hairline
South Indian and Thai food, Hummingbird bakery
quality literature- especially stuff from all the Americas + Forster, Woolf, Baudelaire
feminist-socialist or socialist-feminist (????)
atheist but not in the Dawkins PZ Myers kind of way
love Yoga + Cardio exercise
and am a sucker for ****ty supernatural dramas on TV

Caribbean Literature? Is Wide Sargasso Sea the awesomeness or the evilness? I personally love it. I have a copy of Bottom of the River sitting in my lounge waiting for me to read it. So the obvious stuff, then.

The biggest disappointment of my entire academic life was when the Postcolonial Lit course I took at 3rd Year Level turned out to be horrible. I'd been waiting to take that course ever since I entered varsity. Read some good books for it though.

Wide Sargasso Sea is definitely the awesomeness.
Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo is a good place to start. Earl Lovelace writes beautifully.

Postcolonial doesn't really work- you're still just looking at Europe- so regional stuff is a much more progressive way to group literatures together. But it's good to know people are interested!

I don't think Padel acted appropriately- and I really think Oxford lost out:
Derek Walcott appointed professor of poetry - at Essex University | Books | guardian.co.uk
his approach to lecturing/ working with students is actually brilliant

although I'll never condone those actions, they are a long time in the past- and he's a very old man now- I don't think he'll be up to much harassing. (His partner, who is a really wonderful, vibrant person- is now basically his carer.)

I know one of the people who nominated Walcott for the Oxford position- she's a very prominent feminist- and is still completely into the idea of him taking up these kinds of platforms.
