career patterns within the family

do you (or do you plan to) work in the same sort of field as your parents or other family members?

i'm curious. because it seems like i'm the only member of my immediate family who has absolutely no desire to embark upon a career in teaching/caring.

seriously. my mum used to be a schoolteacher, she now teaches IT to adults. same with my dad. my grandad was a latin teacher, my grandmother was a headmistress. my aunt and uncle are both college lecturers. my cousin works in childcare. my other cousin wants to go into social work.

and then there's me, who wants to go into journalism or publishing. teaching is pretty much the least appealing thing in the world to me. i feel like the oddball of the family.

I certainly have no plans to join the navy.

And I'm already the oddball.

Since my dad does heavy construction work at an airport in Pittsburgh and Mom does secretary work, and I'm into writing and Spanish...I have no plans to follow their career choices.
I don't think they'd want me to, anyway.

everyone in my family is either some sort of scientist or businessman. i dont aim to have a career in either of those fields.. i'm thinking of studying art history at the moment. all of my relatives give me quite a hard time about it.

My husband is a machinist, which is what his father and uncle do. He's interested in changing careers to be a truck driver, and my father, uncle and grandfather are/were truck drivers.

As for me, no one in family does anything remotely close to what I do, which is sort of depressing because I can't "talk shop" with anyone.
