Getting one without a yearly fee and never using it is apparently goodish for your credit rating.

Getting one and rampantly spending with it.. not so good

Dithy, bear in mind shit is different in the UK than in the US. We're going through the same situation, but the response to it has been somewhat different on the part of the banks.

Totally agreed about the contract phone thing, this is probably the easiest way ever to establish credit, and the phone companies will basically chuck a contract at anyone provided they don't already have a bad credit rating.

you could get a credit card, buy like one thing with it, pay it off then not use it again? that would boost your rating up without having to spend lots maybe?
