| I always advise anyone moving into rented accomodation to read up on their rights. I wish I had done when I was 18, we got a house through a private lettings agency popular with students in the area, at first all was fine. Then the vacume cleaner and one of our fridges broke (it was a 6 bedroom house) we reported it but no one fixed it. Then the kitchen sink pipe must have started to leak over the easter holidays when we were away because the room underneath had mould growing on the ceiling. we repoted it and were told to deal with it ourselves. Then when it came towards moving out time, the lettings agency wanted to show people round. One morning I got up early for class and opened my bedroom door to find one of the letting agents and some prospective tennants outside my door! I yelled at him that he was supposed to give 24 hours notice before entering our property, and that if he didn't leave I would call the police. Needless to say those tennants decided not to lease the property after all.
My friend is also currently being royally screwed over by his landlord. He and his fiancee have lived in their rented accomodation for 5 years. For the last 2 years he has been unable to work because his epilepsy no longer seems to be being controlled by his meds, so he has been having tests and trying various other drugs all to no avail. in the mean time he has had to give up work and the only income he has is sickness benefits , his fiancees wages and her carers allowance. Their house was taken over by a new landlord a few weeks back without any prior notice, the landlord now wants to raise the rent by another £250 a month. No new tennancy agreement has been drawn up but despite this he has got his own heavies to come and try to forcibly remove them from the property. He has been to citizens advice but has decided to try and find a new place. |
