i am going crazy sharing a house with my mum and have lived alone before and preferred it to living with her. so here i am trying to find a somewhat nice, one bedroom/studio apartment in melbourne's eastern suburbs. it's impossible.

That or consider moving town. It depends what your priorities are, but sometimes it's worth it if there's nothing particularly tying you to a place.

I lost count of the number of dodgy places I've looked at over the years, in one place the "kitchen" was literaly a cooker in the living room. And why do landlords still furnish their places so badly, stained patterned 70's shag carpetting, nicotine stained curtains, furniture that you usually see dumped on the street. I mean you could go to IKEA and spend about 10p and make the place look ok.

Is a housing market slump going to make the condition of rented accommodation better or worse?
