The whole saving loose change thing works like crazy. I put it all in this big bank thingy in my room and I just brought it to a commerce bank that counts them for free and it was $123. If I didn't put it in the little container in my room it would just like be lost or stuck in a whole bunch of pockets and purses.

It's the principle behind the action - give it away with no strings attached, the universe responds in kind. It's the best antidote to greed I've ever experienced and it keeps my heart in the right place. Yes, seriously.

*Put a portion of your monthly income into a savings account
*If you can use credit cards wisely they often have a cash back scheme at the end of the year, as you earn points when you spend. I only ever pay off within the month so i never go into credit.
*And as knifeyou said: I accidently set up a second normal bank account and because of that you could put a set amount in each month that you allow yourself to spend, whilst still having your other account for back up.

Keep BIG PENNY JARS
I have three, a hello kitty one, and two chinese soda pop bottles. The money is a bitch to get out of which stops you from dipping in. One is for 1cents, the second is for 2cents and the third for 5cent coins.
You can have more for 50cents and even dollars if you want to save more.

Every time you get some money you need to 'pay yourself' a percentage of it. Make it a realistic amount (10%?) and put it in the best savings account you can find and don't touch it. That way it's just like a bill or a tax and you only spend it whenever you can use it for whatever you are saving up for.

That's one way of doing it. I usually just put as much as I can in an ISA as soon as I get paid after working out how much I can survive on until the next pay day. It takes too long to transfer the money back into my account if I needed more and so it's better just to do without spending more money than I budgeted for and just wait for the next pay day. Then I just do the same thing again (maybe save more or less depending on how difficult it was to survive on the money I left in my current account to spend the previous month).
