Getting a Literary Agent

so the title kind of speaks for itself. Having a bitch of a time trying to get someone to represent me, i've gotten the books and read the how-to's but has anyone here been successful (or know someone who has) to get representation? Any tricks to 'stand out'? Much appreciated

basically you've got to have written something worthwhile to the agents. agents are everywhere - look online and in the yellow pages and give them a call.

i've heard never to go with an agent that asks for an up-front reading fee. reputable agents will take their cut AFTER they've sold your book. don't expect the first agent you contact to automatically want to represent you - try everyone you can find.

the most important thing is to have something written an finished (as i'm sure you do) before even thinking about finding an agent.

Last semester I had a class, writing for publication, and I want to do journalism but my professor was really into creative writing & spent most of the time talking about that. She gave us some websites to use in case people were trying to get agents because of how difficult it is & how many scams there are. I'll look & see if I have any of the information any more.

thanks guys! Mrs Molko if you can find anything i'd appreciate it

The prob i'm having in finding who to send querry letters to is that what i want to do isn't 'see dick run' or anything so basic. My idea is explaining mental illness to kids..... not exactly happy bedtime reading even for the brothers grimm its still alittle more 'dark' of a subject than not. So agents that say kids books/self help/educational stuff are more than limited. I know i've got a good audiance, i work w/these ppl and i know how many of them have kids who are just not informed bc mom/dad/caregiver doesnt know what or how to say the key stuff, at somepoint too much is too much and kids tend to 'fill in the blanks' when they dont know enough.

So this is my dillemma
