Going back to college a bit later in life, what do you think?

I may have the opportunity to move back to my hometown, live in one of my dad's rental houses and finish my AA degree, then possibly transfer to the college there and get my degree.

(I say may because I'm talking to my dad this weekend and don't know how much he's willing to help me with.)

I have a job, been there for 10 years (since my wee early 20's) and have been taking one class at a time at my local community college. It's just taking forever to get anywhere class wise, and my job is tapped out unless I get some education.

Is it ever a mistake to go back to school? It would be a significant life change, I do have a toddler and make okay $$. I'm just realizing how stalled everything seems to be for me. I could sit in my cubicle for another ten years, have another baby, live an okay life and not progress further than where I am. But when I think of that, I just about freak out! Too much potential wasted if I just quit now.

My questions are:

Is there ever a bad time to go back to school?
Am I to old and should just stay where I am with my career?

it is never too late to go back to school. im trying to do the same. theres one woman here who went to nursing school in her 30s (i believe). it might be a little harder but it can still be done. especially with help.

I think that you should go back to school if you want to go back to school. I've been at a community college (which was a really good move for me personally) and there are so many adult students in all of my classes. A lot of them deal with a lot more than I deal with in their personal lives--I'm at an age where people expect me to be a broke-assed college kid. But they manage and most of them are there to advance themselves.

Do you plan to get education and advance yourself in your current field, or do you want to change direction entirely?

I hope your dad helps you out.

I think you should definitely go back. On my undergraduate degree course, there was a woman of 55 whose daughter had just gone to university that year at another uni. Now on my masters there are people in their 30s and 40s returning to education. If you want to do it and you don't you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

A little of both actually. The job I'm doing is nothing exciting really, and I've only a GED at this point. but I am bright (not super-smart, but decent enough), and have a solid work ethic - which I attribute making it as far as I have without a HS diploma or degree of some kind.

I'm figuring I can finish my degree, take my solid work experience and combine them into a pretty decent career. And I'll get a degree in something multi-faceted - Communications, English Lit, maybe Library Science - something like that that will take me in several different directions.

I hope he helps me too!! Won't know until Monday when we meet and discuss.
