People studying law [merged threads]

What year are you in? What degree are you getting? What are your plans when you're done?

posted on the other thread just before you made this one ..oops

Anyway as I said, finishing 2nd year, taking 3rd year in the Netherlands on exchange..

My interests are reallly really in international law, public law..hate commercial and private..

but all the jobs are in private law..

gonna give the other side a shot anyway because I will die if i have to spend my life doing commercial, tax, or scots law in a wee high street office.

what about you?

for the future, im not sure but I would love to work for an international org or the diplomatic service..or who knows.

what about you?

Rawkin.
I'm doing an LL.M... as mentioned. It's a year, so I am done in a couple of weeks and then will no longer be a person studying law. I feel the same way about private. I'm doing legislative drafting for the Man next year, and then I have a clerkship with a judge. I'm interested in constitutional rights and legal theory and plan on going the academic route down the road. But who knows, maybe once I start practicing I'll be hooked.

I think you need to stick to your guns if you don't want to do private. There's a lot of other stuff to do if you're willing to fight a bit to get there, and especially if you're taking a somewhat non-traditional job.

The Netherlands sounds really cool!
Now tell me something... Scotland is Common Law, right? I feel like I'm going crazy because I think it is, but it is much more common for civil law countries to admit people to law without an undergrad. Also the whole public/private law thing is more civil...

aha! No you are not going crazy, Scotland is a mixed legal system so it's roots are in both civil and common law. England is common law but it also admits people without an undergrad.

Yeah public is the way to go. My biggest hatred is commercial law, but since I have finished the course hopefully I need never look at it again. What area of law is your LLM in?

I'm not doing law but i do some law stuff in my programme. I'm in my first year of criminology & criminal justice (and behavioural science but that's a different faculty) so i do the basic law without having to remember case sepecifics and the really detailed stuff.

I'm not sure exactly what i want to do in the end. Most people in my programme want to do forensic psych but i don't know if i could stand honours in psychology.
