| | | Rose and Robert split. Quote:
ROSE McGowan's breakup with her fiancée, director Robert Rodriguez, could be good news for some other actresses, who could end up with the leading roles she was set to play in his movies.
McGowan was hoping to star in at least three planned Rodriguez films - a remake of "Barbarella," "Red Sonja" and "Woman in Chains!"
But sources say the couple, who we reported last October were engaged, have split, partly over the problems Rodriguez had finding financing for "Barbarella" - the 1968 cult classic in which Jane Fonda played a sexy space adven- turess - with McGowan in the title role.
McGowan, best known for her witchy role on TV's "Charmed," wasn't thought to have enough box-office draw for the $70 million remake, especially after "Grindhouse" disappointed with about $25.4 million in domestic ticket sales.
"Too bad 'Grindhouse' didn't gross $100 million. Then, maybe, 'Barbarella' would have gotten the green light," said one source. "Instead, the moguls were saying, 'We need a bigger star, a bigger name.' " Jessica Alba has been touted as a possible replacement.
Rodriguez - who directed the "Spy Kids" movies as well as "From Dusk Till Dawn" and
"Sin City" - was wed for 16 years to, and had five kids with, Elizabeth Avellan before he directed McGowan in "Grindhouse."
Page Six first reported their on-set affair in April 2006, and Variety reported how filming had to be halted when Avellan learned of the romance: "The production had to shut down for a month while she recovered" from the revelation's aftermath.
In May 2007, Rodriguez and McGowan went out publicly for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival. In October, she was wearing a big diamond ring. No word on whether she gave it back now that their wedding plans are off.

| | | McGowan Dispels Rodriguez Split Reports
Actress Rose McGowan has blasted reports she has been dropped from her director fiance Robert Rodriguez's forthcoming movie "Barbarella," amid rumors of a split.
The couple, which met on the set of 2007's double bill "Grindhouse," was alleged to have parted ways following a row over financial difficulties for the remake of the 1968 cult classic, in which McGowan would take the lead role.
She was also due to star in two of Rodriguez's other projects -- "Red Sonja" and "Woman in Chains!" -- when reports of the break-up emerged.
But the actress' representative has denied the pair has ended their working relationship, telling People.com, "The production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star."
And a source close to McGowan insists the 34-year-old beauty is still with the filmmaker: "She and Robert are fine." |

| | | I don't see a need for a remake of Red Sonja, but if it must be done I'd rather Rose than most. I was annoyed she never got to share screen time with Shannen in Charmed. I'd probably have watched, or something.

| | | I'm so jealous that she is with Rodriguez.
but, even though I know nothing about what happened between his wife and him, I feel really crushed when I try to imagine being dropped for someone younger and more Hollywood beautiful (thinner and glamorous) after 16 years of marriage and a few kids. |

| | t's been postulated in the past that, as a rule, Hollywood should avoid remaking good movies. While the practice saves money on script acquisition and development costs by recycling already fully realized ideas, there's really nowhere to go but down when the shoot is in the can.
Why not leave the classics alone? Why put Vince Vaughn in a line-for-line redo of Psycho? What did we do to Tim Burton that he would want to fling his Planet of the Apes at us? The Stepford Wives wasn't just about mindless robots. It was made by them. Roland Emmerich's Godzilla? "God-awful." Couldn't someone have set fire to The Wicker Man before we had to sit through it? Steve Martin's Pink Panther was evidently not painful enough as we're getting a sequel soon. With Keanu Reeves in the lead, wlll The Earth "Stand Still" from sheer boredom?
Most of these remakes tire out at the box office before they arrive. Still producers and studio executives think putting stars we probably want to see in movies that we've already seen will bring us into the multiplex.
But Tinsel Town might've hit on a new strategy last week with the announced redo of Red Sonja starring Rose McGowan. This new breed of remake mixes a new chemistry -- a star we really don't follow with a movie we barely remember. Now we're cooking with gas.
The original Red Sonja, based on the comic of the same name, cast the versatile Brigitte Nielsen as the brutal beauty. Arnold Schwarzenegger joined Sonja as the blatantly Conan-esque savage warrior, Kalidor.
I saw the movie. I remember swords, shields, stunted dialogue, struggling dialects, muscles and costumes that were incredibly inappropriate for close combat due to both boob heavage and boob exposure (for both Nielsen and Schwarzenegger).
Now, McGowan will have to take up the sword and dye bottle to play the red-haired heroine in this new version. Last seen as Cherry in the promising, yet disappointing Grindhouse, McGowan brings her innate physical charm to any roll, but the only person really tripping over themselves to get to a Rose McGowan performance is her husband/boyfriend/ex (whatever), Robert Rodriguez (who probably also directed the same movie he's tripping toward).
Still, we're left to wonder if Hollywood will continue with this concoction of casting the "who's that?" in the "who cares?" with other actors and titles. What if we cast Rosie O'Donnell in Showgirls? Vin Diesel in Glen or Glenda? Nia Vardalos and Fabio in Gigli? Kevin Sorbo in The Beast of Yucca Flats? Lea Thompson in Howard the Duck? See? It's fun when you know the secret.
You're free to offer Hollywood more remake gold. Readers are invited to pitch their own rehash concepts and casting below in the comments section. McGowan Making Triumphant Screen Return as Red Sonja | The Underwire from Wired.com
