No sign of Spears at custody hearing (merged)

Spears' lawyers ask to quit custody case - Yahoo! News

Spears' lawyers ask to quit custody case Thu Jan 3, 4:30 AM ET

Britney Spears' lawyers in her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline are quitting.

The law firm Trope and Trope asked a court Wednesday to be relieved as Spears' attorneys. The firm says there's been a "breakdown" in communication with the pop princess that makes representing her "impossible," according to the filing, obtained by CelebTV.com.

A message left with a publicist for Spears' record label was not immediately returned.

Spears and Federline have been wrangling for months over custody of their sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James.

Federline has temporary custody because Spears, who has limited visitation rights, has defied court orders. The two were married in October 2004 and finalized their divorce in July.

On a separate legal front, an attorney for Spears wants the city attorney's office to prove that the pop star is a permanent California resident and is subject to state laws that require her to have a valid California driver's license.

Spears faces up to a year of probation if convicted in a misdemeanor case of driving without a valid license, a charge to which she has pleaded not guilty. The case stems from a videotaped fender-bender in a parking lot in August. A hit-and-run charge has been dismissed.

Spears attorney J. Michael Flanagan earlier Wednesday requested that prosecutors be required to demonstrate that Spears, who owns homes in Louisiana and Florida, intends to make Los Angeles her permanent legal home.

"If they can establish that Britney is domiciled here in California, that she permanently intends to stay here, then she does have a requirement to get a license," Flanagan said in an interview. "Basically, it's a fix-it ticket."

Flanagan said Spears had a valid Louisiana license at the time of the incident and got a California license six days after the complaint was filed.

A call seeking comment from the city attorney's office was not immediately returned. The next court date is Jan. 25.

I wonder: does she really NOT want custody of those kids?

It seems like she goes out of her way to sabotage herself.

The stigma attached to a woman who doesn't want her children is huge, of course... but maybe she should just own up to it and get on with her life, instead of making it "everyone else' fault".

I mean: she makes 700K a month. Let Fed-Ex have 50K a month and permanent custody. Everybody walks away happy (unless he's a seriously delusional gold digger, sheeeeit, anyone can live on 50K a month with two kids... hell, didn't his dad run an autobody shop?).

Put some bucks away in trust for the kids' college educations and pay for their medical needs. Just like a daddy would...

... Is that so wrong? It seems like Fed's PR team wants him perceived as Good Daddy (although I think his other ex might disagree). So let him have them.

Post partum is a bitch. Maybe she's not over it yet.

Shar Jackson has always said/maintained that while Kevin Federline isn't a good boyfriend/husband he is a great father. I don't see why she'd lie about that if it weren't true, it isn't as if she owes him that after what he did to her.

I really don't know what the fuck is going on with Britney Spears. Some people just don't want that responsibility of having to take care of kids and be a parent. My godmother was the EXACT SAME WAY as Britney and she would get custody taken away from her all of the time until the judge got fed up one day and terminated all of her parental rights. She loves her kids in the 'I like seeing you every once in a while as long as you don't interfere with my life' kind of way. It isn't healthy to anyone, especially not my cousins, but I know they are way better off where they are now [which is with family members] than living with a mother who put herself before them.

I think she needs help for all of her issues .
