If there's one thing that we look for when we go shoe shopping, it's the promise of a premature -- or, even better, extremely violent -- death. So naturally, when we stumbled upon the latest ad campaign for Doc Martens footwear, we were drawn in by a passel of photo illustrations featuring such deceased punk icons as Kurt Cobain and Joey Ramone adorned with angel wings and -- of course -- those trademark clunky boots.
While we certainly respect any ad agency's inalienable right to defile the corpses of celebrities hither and yon, we have to wonder why these particular creative types chose to seize upon musicians who seldom wore Docs in the first place -- or, in the case of Sid Vicious, probably couldn't have figured out how to tie the darn things even if given step-by-step instructions. The images used in the ads were chosen, according to writer Andrew Petch, "to communicate that Dr. Martens are made to last."
Fair enough, though we're sure fans of the aforementioned artists would prefer a depiction of a steel-toed model aimed at the groin of the ad-man who came up with the idea in the first place.  |
