this is only australiam merino sheep. the merino has large folds of skin in order to get more wool
pr pound of sheep. the folds give more surface to grow wool.
anyways, they have a huge flystrike problem which kills the sheep. the folds of skin around the anus collect feces and basically rot and the flies breed in those folds and then the larvae feed on the necrotic and living tissue and infect the animal. it happens very very quickly.
so the sheepherders cut the skin around the anus. the procedure is called museling.
i do not buy australian merino wool yarn bc of this. there are other more time consuming ways of caring for the sheep. i think that although more time consuming this should factor into the care of the sheep. museling is really gross.
