And I kind of fell in love again for the first time, you know? Every day is a learning experience for me here at GFY HQ. I have discovered, for example, that, despite what she may wear, J.Lo has really good hair. I've had it confirmed for me that Satin Is Hard To Wear. And I've learned, once and for all, that I have unexpectedly positive reactions people in glasses, be they real or not.

Good old C Love has pulled it together in a kooky way that amuses me. Sure, the dress is too short and she's a total mess, basically, but she's also Courtney Love, and in a way -- as fun as it was to watch Courtney's High Class Makeover of 1996 -- is she really Courtney Love if she's not stomping around with mussed eye makeup and tights? There's something about the way her Punk Mom persona slams right into this new Sexpot Book Author look that makes me want to buy her book and throw a microphone stand at someone's head.

Don’t Call It a Comeback (Yet)

"I PROBABLY shouldn’t be smoking,” Courtney Love said, stubbing out her Camel Light in a small humidifier that the Barnes & Noble on Astor Place provided on Tuesday evening. But the thought died a quick death, and soon her assistant was lighting an unending succession of cigarettes for her.

CRANKY DIVA: Courtney Love, in glasses, arrives at a book signing for her memoir.

Costumed fans approached for autographed copies of her new memoir, “Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love,” a somewhat random inventory of Ms. Love’s life and mind.

Allowing for Halloween, peculiar devotees materialized: one woman wore only a head-to-toe red body stocking. Ms. Love joked that she would sign the book with a drawing of two breasts.

Mellow and looking heavier after more than a year of sobriety, Ms. Love, 42, wore a black and gold Rochas dress and kept a brown crocodile Chloé bag at her feet. Her bleached hair, famous for its no-brush policy, looked professionally styled. Mostly teenagers approached the table; they were mere babes in 1992 when Ms. Love married Kurt Cobain. When one fan asked how she felt, Ms. Love replied, smiling, “A little bit diva, a little cranky.”

The crowd probably knew her best not for her raw punk rock, much-dissected marriage or movie roles like Althea, the wife of Larry Flynt, in “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” but for her tabloid-ready personal dramas, which she referred to when her weight gain was mentioned: “I’m not a size 6, darling, don’t even plan on being. When I was fat, I said, ‘When I become an 8 again, I’m just gonna be grateful.’ When I was too skinny I was on Court TV a lot.”

The black cloud over Ms. Love’s career is heavy with drug arrests, violent behavior, bare skin and blunt words. A particularly self-defeating week in March 2004 included flashing her breasts to David Letterman and being charged with assaulting a fan. Toward the end of “Dirty Blonde,” Ms. Love writes: “I’ve scrubbed clean the mud and rags of 2000-2005; five years of hell.”

Several fans asked about her 14-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. “In every interview I’ve done lately it’s nonstop questions about Kurt and Frances,” Ms. Love said later. “I mean,” she added, she is who she sleeps with (to paraphrase) “and I am my progeny, and that’s all I am?”

Then she read aloud a text message: “Mom, I just saw you on ‘The View.’ It was very cute and only 30 percent embarrassing for me to hear the stories you told.”

Soon, she was riding in a limo to her book party at the Beatrice Inn in the West Village, discussing the book’s incarnation: “I was moving things from storage and had material I’d collected over the years. Kurt’s journals had done really well and I thought I’d publish mine, too.”

The book offers several gems; one is a 1976 rejection letter from the Mickey Mouse Club. “I read Sylvia Plath’s poem ‘Daddy,’ ” Ms. Love said, grinning widely. “I don’t think Disney was ready for me.”

Having changed for the party, the woman who wore a $32 dress from Contempo Casuals to the 2004 Grammys because no designer would dress her was now draped in a $40,000 Alessandro Dell’Acqua gown.

Ms. Love’s friend Michael Stipe was dressed as an angel. “She’s in the top three smartest people I’ve ever met,” he said over the din, “and she’s made an amazing record the world has yet to hear.”

Famous for her comebacks, Ms. Love is releasing a new album, “How Dirty Girls Get Clean,” sometime in the spring. It was produced by Linda Perry, who has compared Ms. Love’s lyrics to Bob Dylan’s. Will this comeback stick? “There was this item in Rolling Stone where they said something like, ‘You guys all need therapy, comparing Courtney Love to Bob Dylan,’ ” Ms. Love said, “and I was thinking, time will tell.”

here was a Rolling Stones benefit concert for the Clinton Foundation at Beacon Theatre [NYC] last night [10/29] - where Jack White and Christina Aguilera performed their own duets with Mick Jagger.Bill and Hillary were there but left before midnight. The Clinton Party crew continued on at the after party at the Gramercy Park hotel where Courtney Love, Jack White, Steve Bing, and Mario Batali were amongst the guests who kept going into the early hours of the morning.

Meanwhile, Steven Meisel is making arrangements to travel to meet with Courtney Love, who he is photographing for a spring issue of Italia Vogue. "I've spoken with Courtney, and she's open to any ideas I have. She wants the pictures to have a rock and roll, edgy, but still chic atmosphere so I've taken that into consideration. Courtney's a gem to work with, so the outcome should be fantastic."
