"Paris" Sucks

In the first week of its release, Paris Hilton's self-titled CD, Paris, is being widely considered by many music insiders to be a complete and utter failure. With only 75,000 copies sold in the United States, next week's projected sales are said to drop significantly to 30,000. In comparison, Christina Aguilera's "Back to Basics" churned out first-week sales of 320,000.


Paris" is languishing at the bottom of Billboard's Hot 100 - so Hilton's label rushed out her second single, "Turn It Up," which isn't doing very well either. "The international outlook is not much better for her," one industry source told Page Six. "The international people are not inclined to do a big push since she can't back up the album with a tour. Obviously, she can't sing live." The source added that Hilton was advised a year ago to train her voice, work with choreographers and learn an instrument to prepare for a limited tour, but "obviously she didn't listen."

well that is so cool. I guess it's karma. She's overexposed and it's disrespectful that she thinks she has a legitimate shot at a singing career by just being a Hilton.

I just find it kind of sad that you have to constantly post about how much you dislike her. Like in the "Paris Hilton- Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" thread where you you said she looked "like shit" and posted practically an entire interview she had done. my point is that you seem to go to a lot of trouble for someone you "hate".

Maybe you should find something better to do than amuse yourself at her supposed failure and apparent ugliness.

um, i dont go looking for paris hilton related things all day...like i said i was on a gossip site, and the information was posted.

i dont "hate" her, as i dont know her, but i think shes a joke. thats my opinion and im sticking to it.

the information seems to be the wishes of someone who hates her whether she can sing or not.

personally, i don't like her, but i'm not gonna deny good dance music when i hear it. and both singles have gotten good places on the dance charts so far...

HILTON CHECKS IN Paris brings us the beats on her new pop album. And God help us, we're dancing

Why shouldn't Paris Hilton be a pop star? Because she can't sing (any better than you do in the shower)? Because she doesn't need the money? Because there are roughly 9,396,547 more deserving talents out there? America has already obliterated that logic by embracing undertalented reality-show siblings, dabbling actresses, and oddly mannish burlesque dancers in the same role.

And if there's one thing the Ashlees, J. Los, and Pussycats have shown, it's that anyone with a smart image maker and access to a fancy recording studio can have a hit. Which is why Hilton's debut is approximately as good and bad as albums by any of her Mystic-tanned rivals. Yes, Paris' lyrics are often both inane and vaguely porny (see ''Screwed'': ''Tonight, tonight, you're gonna turn down the lights/And give me a little more room just to prove it to you''), and Paris herself shamelessly cribs Gwen Stefani's breathy, girlish delivery and reggae rhythms.

Pop music, however, is rarely built on original concepts, and thanks to Willy Wonkas like über-producer Scott Storch, Paris is a candy box well-stocked with NutraSweet melodies, from the summery island groove of lead single ''Stars Are Blind'' to the synth-disco come-on ''Not Leaving Without You.'' You may hate what she stands for, but don't let that keep you off the dance floor. Grade: B
