| i don't know if it's a typo or not, but "interest" doesn't have an 'e' at the end.
as for 'where' and 'when,' it's a matter of preference. 'where' obviously describes location ("the university where i studied...."). 'when,' as you said, deals with time, but since you added "for the university's 'such and such lab,'" you gave the location. 'where' would sound redundant to me. 'when' is fine.
