| | Nontraditional wedding dresses hey ladies (and perhaps gents?)...
i'm helping a friend find a wedding dress (she's "challenged" in the shopping dept., and it's my forte!). she is willing to go nontraditional, including not wearing white. shes also quite short, and i'm thinking a full-length gown might be overwhelming on her. anyone have any suggestions? web sites, stores, etc? preferably, if possibly, sites/stores in the US. ive been to the usual web sites but most of the dresses there are either too boring & conservative or hideous. truly, awful (ie, white culotte-pants outfits and "cowboy themed" dresses... shudder!). oh, she also likes corsets. thanks! |

| | do a local search for bridal consignment shops. A lot of people sell their dresses after and you might find something nice and simple like my sister did. I had my dress custom made from http://www.peachberserk.com and had it dyed butter yellow and printed with white lipstick tubes over top. set me back about a grand canadian but it was completely custom and tailored. hand dyed, printed and made to order.
you could always find a seamstress and have her whip up something from a pattern. the possibilities are endless. I'd say a simple slip dress would be hot on somebody petite. |

thanks so much. the pakistani dresses are *gorgeous*
just goes to show how dreadfully BORING traditional western bridal wear is.
Vera wang is likely beyond my friends budget, and frankly, im a little bored with her stuff lately. but ill take a look.
this is much more fun than shopping for myself, btw. i highly recommend shopping for friends if they need help! i think im going to help her with her gift registry too, since she's also intimidated by that. |

| | | One of my favorite wedding dresses I've ever seen was worn by kr member Kellie. Bright red. I loved it. And my best friend got married in 3 different outfits (she had a full on traditional Pakistani wedding in Pakistan) and not one was white. She wore gold, green and deep red. They were each gorgeous. I'm thinking your friend could just get an evening dress in any color she wants. And it would probably be less money just by not being in the bridal dept. |

I don't think I could wear a traditional white dress. The whole concept of a wedding seems so dated and cliched to me anyways -- spending a ton of my parents' money and way too much of my time creating this big event for people to sit there and look at me? Going through all that is enough, having to do it in a big white Vera Wang dress would leave me unable to take myself seriously. I'd think everyone in the audience was secretly laughing, thinking "what the fuck does she think she's doing?" |

| | | Red definitely has to be one of the nicest wedding dress colours. A girl I know got married in red and she looked stunning. I think white should really only be worn by 'pure' brides anyway and not many people are nowadays. But I think ivory can look nice if you still want a touch of tradition. Big dresses are also gross. |

I'd rather spend the cash on a fantastic trip or a house. And then just have a little dinner party for our friends and families because I would like them to be a part of it in someway. But I don't need to spend thousands of dollars on ONE DAY. The stress of deciding who to invite and if I have to invite people I hate. Ugh. Forget it. I'll just buy some pretty, cheap frock that I can wear again, go on a great trip, get married and then serve the people some chicken or something at my house! |

But I don't know what the husband's people would think. Especially since I don't even know the husband yet. |

initially we only wanted to invite about 50-75 people to our wedding.
pfft...i think that the list has gotten to about 165 now and it isn't even done yet.
my mom and jeff's mom keep adding people, they don't wanna leave anyone out.
so much for our "small" wedding. |

long story short-- if you arent into the tradition of it all, save the money for a honeymoon or a home or just a party... something youll really enjoy. dont let anyone hijack YOUR wedding! man alive, so many mothers of the brides turn into bridezillas, its almost a crime.
