| | | what should one wear to an interview at... a) Urban Outfitters?
b) Starbucks?
I have both on monday. Should I just wear UO clothes to the first one, something that would fit in as something an employee there could wear, but make sure I'm not too grungy? And how much should I dress up for a starbucks one? This is southern california and a place full of college students (the starbucks is on campus) so it's incredibly casual. |

| | | for my sbux interview i wore black pants, a pink shirt, a pink blazer & flat black shoes. and i got the job. even though it is a pretty casual place, you still need to dress up for the interview. my store manager would pretty much refuse to hire people who showed for interview in jeans or anything too casual. he said it showed that they didn't take it seriously.
as for UO, that would be a really hard one. cos you'd want to wear their clothes and look pretty fashionable but then at the same time you don't want to be too casual...
good luck. |

| | | Wear something smart and business-y to both. You're selling yourself on your knowledge and personality, so make yourself presentable. I don't mean wear a suit or whatever, but just something smart that looks like you mean you want the job. Any moron can rock up in casual clothes. I usually wear tailored pants and a fitted blouse to mine and even if I don't get the job, 9 times out of 10 I actually get a letter in the snail mail because they were impressed at my professionalism, attitude and attire.
Go figure. I never usually want the jobs I apply for anyways. |

| | Thanks for the help...But I don't even own a pair of black pants or a blazer or any kind of button up shirt I guess I'll have to either go shopping or try to find something in my closet that works. I've always just preferred dresses when I had to dress up, and all mine are sundresses. |

I would suggest you get some clothes for the sole purpose of interviews. When I was a manager in a bar I used to have to judge people on their appearance for their interview. I didn't like doing it, but most establishments have a checklist of the things they want employees to have.
The best person I ever interviewed rocked up in ripped jeans, flip flops and a cardigan, but the manager above me wouldn't give him a trial because of his appearance. *shrug* It was only barwork, so I don't see why his amazing personality was discounted so readily, but that's how it is. |

| | | For starbucks wear black trousers and a shirt, or something similarly smart.
Wouldn't know about Urban Outfitters, something smart yet fashionable I guess. |

Originally Posted by [kathy] Can I just say that interviews do not automatically mean you have to swathe yourself in black! | I really hope not. I have no black pants. I can't wear fitted shirts because they're too big on me. It has to be a very small size in a petite cut or it looks like a man's shirt, and it's really hard finding petite sizes in tops. And I've never had to dress up really. My other job was at abercrombie, they don't want anyone who looks formal. Even my college interviews out here, they told me to wear shorts because it was hot. It's a very casual place. I have a dress that's about knee length and a purple cardigan to go with it and some decent shoes, and hopefully that will work. |

but in the US the wages would be different. |

I have plenty of clothes from there so I had no real reason not to. I also wound up wearing that to an impromptu (they called and asked if I wanted to come in that afternoon) interview at the Cheesecake Factory and am basically hired, I went through two interviews and a personality test and got a call back for an interview with the DM a half hour after I left.
I did wind up in jeans at starbucks because all my "nice" clothes had been worn in the past few days at other interviews/etc, but it obviously didn't hurt my chances because she said that if I had summer availability I would have been hired (college town, they always ask where you'll be in summer) and gave me the number of the store and told me to call her in fall.
Like I said, it's a very casual part of the world. The president of the company my stepdad works for wears shorts to work. If you're not in ugg boots or gauchos and flip flops, you're dressed up. |

| | | I always go off the rule of, you dress one step above the job you're interviewing for.
Seems to work.
Like this job I have now, it's way casual, I'm in jeans a tunic and flip flops.
To interview, I wore black/grey tweed capris, a black tie neck top & 2" black heels and was hired on the spot. So.....eh.....
