Trainers / running shoes that are well-kept/clean (polished) and not scruffy? Converse are a problem b/c they only look good when they're scruffy imo.

You're trying to be casual without looking like a messy bastard.

That is what I take from "neat casual".

Open toed shoes are wrong in any work situ i think. If they're saying no to that **** in a "neat casual" scenario, you know it's all sorts of wrong.

What kind of job is this? That would help...

Generally speaking, I'd say dress nicer than you think you need to on the first day. It's always better to be overdressed than underdressed in any situation where you aren't sure what is expected.

If someone told me to dress neat casual I would wear smart shoes, nice, dark jeans and a stylish collared shirt that isn't business but looks smart and crisp.

If in doubt, don't wear it. You don't want to be self conscious about your outfit on your first day.

New Balance 574s for the winnz. It's what I wear to work, and we're "neat casual".
