I am going to buy a suit...

!!!

I never wear smart clothes but I have a *MAXI-IMPORTANT* Interview for a high-flying University job...and also one as the P.A. for a doctor...

Fuck.

However I have been instructed to wear a suit, which I have never owned...

I need to buy one on Sunday...

HELP?!

I was thinking if I got a nice woolen one that I could wear a cute peter-pan-collared blouse with it may not be so bad, add pearls, patent heels, alice band...?

SUGGESTIONS/PICTURES?!

i don't like wool, but you can't go wrong with black or gray. don't wear a lot of accessories. don't try to look cute, this is serious. a white blouse is good, but business like is the best.

good luck!!

No! Don't buy a suit. Are you 50? Get a nice pencil skirt, a nice blouse, and some smart shoes. A suit won't be much smarter than this and if you get the suit wrong you will look terrible and it will be a waste of money.

i agree with not going overboard with accessories! if you're going to wear a suit you should get a nice tailored one! men-style suits look hot on women, i think? haha
but a pencil skirt and a good shirt would also work. with heels!

not a mens style suit for an interview. ffs!
wool will be really heavy. get something midweight and fitted. nothing worse than poorly fitting jackets.
if they say wear a suit to the interview wear a full suit. skirted ones are usually fine but you really shouldnt be just going in a skirt and jacket.
alice band is fine for an intreview i think. and court heels. not high skanky ones

Ok...

Finally ended up with

Grey well fitted suit jacket,
Black top,
Black 50's style skirt,
patent low heeled Mary Janes,
Plain black Alice band.

I am not 50, but the people interviewing me are of that generation.

And although I normally wear dresses & blouses etc to work, I have a tattoo on my wrist that needs to be covered up for the interview!

Yargh!!

haha this made me lols.

for my last round of interviews, i decided to experiment and not wear a suit or stockings/tights. it was 90+ degrees though that week so i guess no one faulted me for it. i just went the blouse or lightweight sweater, pencil skirt, and pointy-toed heels route (no higher than 3.25 inches).

normally to interviews i would wear something like the following:

but instead of pants i'd wear a skirt:

black tights and black shoes similar to the ones in the skirt picture would probably work.

edit...i took too long to find pictures when i was posting this... what you got sounds great!

get a big bracelet or two for the tattoo.
also, a good suit is always altered. may take a day or two, but i maybe it doesn't fit just right, a tailor isn't always expensive i don't think. i'm not sure about suits.

There are some interviews that basically require a suit for the interview. At 22 years old I had to invest in a nice suit for my interviews to become a flight attendant. I despise Skirt suits, so I chose a great gray Pant suit from Ann Taylor Loft with a silky pattered top underneath and pointy-toed pumps. I looked freakin GOOD! It was an investment, but a suit is an unwritten rule for FA interviews. If you have good taste and find a suit that its you well, it can be your BFF(haha)!! It's not just for 50 year olds....
