| | | A Nice Frock Coat for a Man Hello
My boyfriend's stinkin' rat of a brother has usurped my plans to take the boy away to Reykjavik for his 30th birthday by having his hippy wear-what-you-like-in-a-field wedding on the day, and so we've decided eccesntric high-octane glamour will be what we're going for.
It's fine for me - I have a hat and a couple of options for a dress to go with it (a costume designer friend who gets me will help out, probably) but Matthew's having a bit of trouble.
Basically, we want a frock coat that's nice(ish), not too expensive, and, crucially about 42" chest measurement. Is " feet or inches? I mean inches, anyway.
This is our favourite but a bit too expensive. Any ideas where we could pick something similar up?
Undying love and personal favours for anyone who can help.
xx

I'm hopeless at life, never mind fashion, so I can't help but I wanted to give a thumbs up for the overall gesture.
Bummer about your man's birthday, though.
(btw, I'm not sure if it's just my browser but I'm not seeing any photos or links or that?)

- Alors, pourquoi l'as-tu pris?
- Parce que je ne pensais pas qu'il pleuvrait. |

| | | Do they have fancy dress hire places in Edinburgh? If so, maybe they would be a starting point and they can refer you to somewhere that you could source a suitably fabby frock coat. Maybe s'thing in a velvet/military/Jimi Hendrix-Noel Fielding stylee perhaps?
Shame you didn't have the element of time & £££, there's loads of places in London you could prolly find a suitable frock coat.
Good luck!

We've been round lots of charity shops and vintage places but haven't found anything. I was in London a couple of weeks ago and I wish we'd thought ahead so I might have found something...

| | | well, I always think Burtons is alright for suit type stuff at inexpensive prices.
my experience with charity shops is you'll get much luckier at the ones in towns rather than cities that have high populations of young people scowering charity shops. generally I find city charity shops are over-priced and focus on the smaller sizes. small town ones it's all school stuff that flies out the door and there are loads of suits and jackets and things, usually around those sizes.

Especially annoying is the Edinburgh Uni poser crowd who steal all the semi-decent stuff. I think this weekend I might get out and about and looks for something again. Is there anyway in Glasgow or nearby that might be worth checking?

| | | well the thing is, in coatbridge, cumbernauld and airdrie and places like that where I work sometimes (work for the council so can end up anywhere within the area) there is some amazingly good charity shops and all my best finds come from there. but they can be hit and miss as they've not got a burgeoning fashion conscious population and to go there and fail would be kinda awful considering they're such vile out of the way places (really vile, not even in a jokey way, I've been attacked in cumbernauld twice, threatened in airdrie twice and coatbridge is teaming with serious wierdos).
you know where might be good though, Stirling. it's basically a uni population there so most of the types that check out charity shops should be away leaving boons aplenty.
If you are coming through to glasgow, I'd say around byres road is where to look. (generally the streets that intersect it though, great western road has a few and argyle street at the byres road end has a massive salvation army charity shop aswell as a few others) also, there's a very good one called Mr Bens at kings cross, but they know they're good and so you could still end up paying what you'd pay in a high street shop.
however I think it's a bit much effort for a charity shop hunt. is there nothing on ebay?

Yeah, eBay was a bit disappointing for us - some nice things, but very few in the right size, and when they would fit they were just so expensive.
We've decided to country squire him up instead - lots and lots of tweed! We have a jacket and cravat but need some plus fours and appropriate footwear. I'm sure we'll find some.
