| | | Rat just chewed my favourite shoes Fucking hole in them! Aaah!
And she chewed my favourite NEW handbag and my favourite purse. Holes in everything, but she is too cute to be cross with.
Instead I need new shoes, I have made moaning threads about this before but I desperately need a pair of non leather pumps, preferably shiny black.
you are good at this sort of thing, help? |

| | | haha what a prude
Next time you are in Northern Ireland go to Dunnes Stores 'cause they have lots of really good quality pumps at low prices.
I got the most PERFECT pair of shiny flat black Mary Janes there for €12. they're v funky, the kind you can wear casually or dressily. I don't really know how to describe them 'cause I don't know much about shoes? They are kind of plasticy but not flimsy or anything |

| | Will she chew non-leather things as well?
Bc my cousin's ferret does; idk much about rats.
leFerret (inappropriately named "Angel", I guess cause she's white?) chewed up cousin's bf's leather jacket AND his non-leather boots too. But I think maybe she hates him or sumthin?
Sorry about your shoes & bag. I find it hard to be nice to Wolfdoggie when she's chomped on something that is mine and that I really like.
Pets. Sigh. Gotta love 'em.
Luck on finding something the lil brat I mean darling won't have for a snack.

| | Ah yeah Dunnes, I never go in there but they won't be leather will they?
Chyia I just don't like leather! My handbag was fake leather too.
I give them all the toys in the world and they still like to chew my things.
Amity I kept them in my cupboard and she sneaked in! she's sitting on my knee right now licking my hand i think she is sorry |

| | | Don't buy new shoes. Make the old stuff part of yr vintage stylez. It will work...I think...maybe? Pumps are rubbish, they last about 3 months before falling apart and going into landfill. I'm assuming veganism/vegetarianism is the reason you want non-leather, right? If I'm not right then ignore this, but if you avoid animal products for environmental reasons AT ALL then just get leather handmade shoes. That way you're not exploiting kids in some Bangladesh factory too. If you are seriously thinking of buying Primark shoes to save a cow's life then I recommend you re-think your ethics. If you're not, then forgive me for sounding so accusative. |

I'm sorry I don't really think about the kids in Bangladesh I am a horrible person.
Even if I didn't like animals, I'd still not eat them because it is a DEAD thing same with leather, its a dead things skin, revolting beyond anything else EW.
Basically I love animals and have all lovely fake leather things so I am not wearing dead animals.
I know it won't save a cows life I just don't want to feel like I am contributing to the death of cows.
I sort of get annoyed (not at you btw! i don't mean you) when people say things like, not eating meat won't save animals but that's not really sensible to think that it won't I KNOW it won't I just don't want to be part of it.
This is Alice the culprit. She is so naughty here she is actually pulling petals from between my fingers with her hands. She eats my hair too and chewed the carpet in my room (although i am glad for that, because my roommates havent put me on the tenancy agreement they can just pay for that) |

My mice used to chew holes in my clothes when I would have them on my shoulders so I would be going around with holey collars and sleeves but I just couldn't get mad at them 'cause like what's the point it's not like you can teach them discipline |

On an ecological scale, having massive landfill sites full of synthetic throwaway shoes is eventually going to contribute massively towards killing all the cows in the world, along with everything else. You could criticise leather chemical dyes, but that argument falls flat with just a glimpse of what goes on in mass-manufacture of synthetic shoes. Out of interest, with the 'dead things' argument, where is the line drawn? Everything in the world is made out of dead things; nylon/plastic shoes are made out of oil which is made from dead fish (someone might correct my science a little there but the point would still remain). The argument has always seemed to me too close to Theseus's ship.
& There is good reason to be annoyed at people who say 'not eating meat isn't going to save cows' or worse, the smug ones who think it's witty to say 'for every cow you don't eat, I'll eat three'. Meat's only supplied to match demand, so every person who doesn't want 'to be part of it' helps reduce demand slightly. I guess the point you could be getting at is that wearing leather is 'condoning' slaughter despite it only be a by-product and not the end, which is a stronger argument but one I don't agree with. (don't you hate how the emotive 'slaughterhouse' has been neutralised into the almost charmingly gallic 'abbatoir' btw?)
Anyway, sorry to hijack your thread, I'm just always curious about other people's grounds for ethical beliefs. Your rat is cute. I like this website, esp. greenshoes and roosters: Shoemakers.org.uk - Shoes, Sandals, Boots and Clogs from specialists. Vegan and Leather. |

| | | I must say I have never thrown a pair of shoes in the bin. Not even these chewed ones.
I know it is bad but I am not as environmentally conscious as I should be, of course I care about rain forests and don't waste paper and basic things, but I never think about landfill sites etc. Leather tanning is one of the worst things you can do to damage the environment.
The reason I don't like leather is basically because I like cows, just as I like dogs, and I would never wear dog skin shoes.
Plastic is made from dead fish yes, but those fish died millions of years ago of natural causes. No I wouldn't wear a cows skin that had died of natural causes just like I wouldn't eat a dog that died of natural causes.
It's ok I like talking about this. Alice is the cutest rat ever along with Viv. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
