I bought this really awesome brown winter coat and I was thinking I'd wear it with a pair of black jeans. Does that go? Someone once told me to never wear brown and black together.

i dont think they go together. it just looks tacky imo, but do what you think looks good.

same goes for navy and black .

Personally, I'd never do it. I think it just tacky, yuck, not a good combo, etc.

What colours do go well with brown? I've never owned anything brown, I'm confused

i like to wear earthy colors with brown.

I honestly think it's Ok depending on what pieces you put together, if it looks ok to you and you believe it, other people will.

I must have a horrible sense of style because I like brown and black together. It reminds me of All Sorts licorice, but then again not a lot of people like those haha.

my mother told that rule to me
i have seen lots of people do it though and pull it off w.out looking tacky
i really think it depends on the items
personally i think navy and black look far worse together
though i have done even that at least once- w/ comfy clothes just to run to the store or whatever
because i just really don't care most of the time

Yes, black and navy are terrible. Although I do it, but I'm not really one for looking stylish.

I don't understand how two colours together can be tacky (ed. apart from pink and red...or just pink with anything) ...can someone explain that?

I do think black and brown together is dodgy ground BUT it can be done, but not just with anything, and it depends upon the shade of brown. I infact think that when done well its quite a good look...but according to this thread I'm very odd in thinking so.

word, even dark purple (aubergine like ?¿) would look good with brown

dark purples look amazing. also deep burnt oranges
pale pink also works with chocolate browns. not tans though

i love plum and brown together
you dont see people do it much though
and light pink can be nice w/ it too, yes

also tiffanys blue or robins egg blue and chocolate brown is divine
not tan again though.
