Why is sensible winter wear so ugly?

I mean shoes in particular. I live in rural MA so there is no point in wearing any kind of fashion boots. They'd get wrecked. I also don't like boots in general.

Those sort of heavy duty outdoorsy shoes do the trick but they're kind of ugly. Not to mention that there is no way I am spending $150 on a pair of shoes.

Where are the comfortable, not ugly, good traction and water-proof shoes?

I know exactly what you mean. I'm in need of some good footwear for work (so needs to look professional) that will see me through the winter. A pair of boots with thick wooly socks underneath would suffice, but most boots have very little grip on the soles, and it's a nightmare trying to negotiate icy ground without that.

I could always wear proper hiking-esque boots and then change into formal footwear when I arrive in the office, but then my trousers will drag along the wet ground the whole way and get worn at the hem. I really don't feel like having all my trousers adjusted to a length suitable for flats.

There's just no winning.

I realllyyy don't like leather boots. Some of them are ok, but as a whole, ew.
I got some boots which i LOVE for winter, but they're suede & a light grey so water stains them real bad

I tried spraying them with that water proof spray to no avail

Leather can also be a bit of a nightmare if the weather is extremely wet. I have a pair of perfectly good leather boots that went slightly crinkly after about 20 minutes of traipsing through the pishing rain. Not cool.

i know exactly what you mean. i used to go to school in my wellington boots and store them in my locker. i go to a really rural university that tends to flood a lot now, so i wear (highstreet bought, with a chunky heel) riding boots! i guess i look a bit like i've lost my horse but i don't care because I HATE my trousers dragging along the ground.
if you're not a girly girl doctor martens might be an option? i have a pair of their ankle boots and theres no way the wet can get in to them, plus they're really comfy. but i don't wear them because i feel like a man. you can get mary jane ones though, but all of the goth twats over here have them so i won't wear them.

a kids shoe shop! some places still do kids sizes up to a UK4, which I can just about fit into, plus they make them with good grip on the bottom because kids tend to...fall over and stuff. which is handy for me. no more sprained ankles on ice!

I just wear regular shoes..with a heel. I'm not a fan of boots. We dont really get bad snowstorms here so I dont need to wear snowboots or anything. Even if we did, I'd still wear heels

My feet are too big, I'm a US size 81/2 I MUST get them though. I hope they make adult's w/a good grip at the bottom too. I'm a bit of a klutz.

This is what I'd been doing. I'm not feeling sporty enough lately. My wardrobe kind of has changed, so sneakers would be odd. That is what I will probably end up doing though.
