RANT: Who the hell dictates fashion anyway?

I can understand things like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller kicking off the boho style, as well as Demi Moore brought back the pixie ca. 1990, so I'm not referring to that.

But c'mon... cheesy legwarmers and pencil-leg jeans? NO ONE looks good in them unless you are prepubescent or anorexic. Seriously now. People with a healthy weight (and I mean healthy, not average-American chubby!) look awful in them. They are TACKY. Almost as tacky as thong-bikini-underwear-shoved-up-one's-ass-crack-visible-with-low-rider 2005 TACKY.

... and what about the idiotic clown-silly bubble skirts? They look STUPID. On ANYONE. They would look stupid on Kate Moss, even! Guess what? Move over, flattering styles! The BUBBLE SKIRT is HERE!

So I was wondering, who the HELL decides these stupid-ass throwback trends that should never come back? WHO? Is it all fashion-house or company-driven marketing to make women feel blase' if they don't have the latest style? Well, the joke's on them, I say. They're all FAUX trends-- promulgated by industry rather than consumer-driven.

Take the "Gibson girl" of the early 1900's... it wasn't some crap that was thrown out the window the following year-- it actually took off and most women WANTED it. You can even use the recent example of grunge plaid flannel shirts of the early 90's. No one dictated that shit, but everyone was WEARING IT then, fashion be damned. And it actually MEANT something, because it defied the polished 80's Wall Street corporate ass-kisser look. The designers didn't even catch on until the trend was over, several years later, and by that time grunge looked STUPID. Because everyone knew it was FAKE, and the Zeitgeist had passed.

I think designers and fashion houses need to do a better job of listening to what women WANT, rather than saying "Here, we designed this and now you need to wear it because it's a 'trend.'" Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano can kiss my ass, thankyouverymuch!

it's not like there's a main puppeteer pulling the strings, saying "this is what american women are going to wear this year." it's a conglomerate effort. if you don't like, wear things that you like and start your own trends. and for the record, i look good in skinny jeans. i'm neither anorexic nor pre-pubescent.

exactly, you wear what you want and don't follow fashion and people will follow you, or maybe not.

if it looks bad, don't wear it and don't blame the fashion houses when you can't find something that looks amazing on you.
Fire your personal stylist.

I actually do start my own trends, and people often ask: "That looks great-- where did you get that?" because what I wear is flattering to my body.

If you look great in skinny jeans and are neither skinny nor anorexic, then congrats to you! You make up the 1% of the population... all I'm saying is, if only 1% of the population looks "great" in this style that's shitty for everyone else, then why is a disproportionate (50% plus) amount of jeans AVAILABLE to purchase this year skinny jeans? What a waste of denim!

I'm ranting about WASTE. It is WASTEFUL to have kids from Third World country sweatshops crank out this shit because a fashion house says it's the IN THING and pays them 25 cents an hour. It's wasteful to have magazines report falsely on the so-called "trends"! It's not a TREND, it's marketing, designed to get you to think you need to buy an entire new wardrobe every year, which is incredibly wasteful. I don't do that of course, but I hate being told-- even if I ignore it-- that this is the "in style", when it ISN'T!

of course, but these stupid so called "trends" do have an impact on what's available. it really makes shopping hell if what you are looking for is a simple black skirt that's fitted at the waist and hip and flared at the hem (a style that is flattering on 75% of the population) when all you see are broomstick skirts (which make many people look short and fat evenb if they're not) and stupidass bubble skirts are taking up space in the racks, which maybe 5% of all shoppers might consider buying.

I don't think the fashion houses are conspiring against us to make us wear ridiculous clothes. But much of what is churned out by the fashion houses is designed to look good on a skinny model with the body of a ruler. Unfortunately, the stores that go on to sell replicas of that stuff don't take that into consideration. So we end up with all these pieces that look great on the skinny minority and, meantime, the rest of the population (ever increasing in size) isn't genuinely catered for other than in a few specialist stores.

There definitely needs to be a shift. Fashion is essentially catering for those who are 'priviliged' with an extremely thin body. Where does that leave everybody else? I guess you have to either go with the flow, even if the clothes don't look great on your body, or go through the painstaking process of seeking out only very-hard-to-find clothes that flatter you and risk seeming out of fashion. If you strike it lucky, you could even start your own trend.

the gibson girl? what, women wanted to be corsetted and to wear dresses every day? please.

we have more freedom now about what to wear than ever. high fashion should be about being creative, not about considering with every collection whether every piece will look good on everyone.

karl lagerfeld and john galliano don't design for the masses. they design for a niche market, within which they consistently deliver what is asked of them.

you can't possibly convince me that flattering styles for most body types aren't readily and widely available. most north americans are not stick then, and most don't wish (or have the means) to spend thousands on a sweater, thus the success of target, the gap, and all the other stores you'll find at your local mall.
