| | | Tips on making your own clothes. i like to think im a pretty creative person and ive always wanted to make my own clothes. something no one else is wearing. i like the idea of that.
but i dont know exactly how to go about doing this.
there used to be a thread or two with some helpful link and tips and such before the site crashed.
can anyone come up with anything?

| | | you need a pattern
this site has some cool free ones, or you could buy from the store: i can't make the link work, just google fitz pattersm it's the first option
i don't know what your dressmaking experience is, or how advanced it is so i wouldn't know where to start with the advice.
what is it you need to know?

| | | hmm. well okay
the first step is understanding patterns. if you want to sew something from scratch, you need a pattern for it. which you can buy at most dressmaking shops.
then you get the fabric you want. i would advise against anythign a) too stretchy or b) too shiny/silky as they are very hard to work with
do you have a sewing machine/know how to use it?

| | | i've been making my own clothes for a while now and still can't understand patters... i've only used a few, and the language is just bizarre on the ones i've tried...
i just trace every panel of a garment i already own onto some fabric, cut it out and sew it together. i've always found that works fine... maybe do a short sewing course. |

I want to make something from a pattern, I havent used one since sewing class in eighth grade. I just come up with my own solutions, which is both good and bad. |

| | | basically it depends on your level of knowledge. it's pretty easy if you're familiar with using a sewing machine.
like others have said, you can often just trace panels of clothing onto fabric and then sew them together. look at the way your garments are constructed, you have to sort of think in 3D then its really really easy.
also, lyrical, it's often more expensive to amke your own clothing than buy some new stuff. fabric isn't cheap if you want quality

| | | just practice. I've never used a pattern before, but I don't really make my own clothes. I just reconstruct them.
the few things I've made on my own came out alright.
I only looked on ohmystars.net once years ago and have been on my own since. I'm pretty good now. just practice with old crappy fabric til you get the hang of it. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
