| | | Freakish "Period" Clothing Here I am, watching some show on PBS, that I'm not familiar with, but am guessing that the drama is supposed to be taking place in the 20's-early 30's (provided this is a modern drama).
I'm sitting here thinking "Those clothes look sickeningly modern, and almost caricatures of what real people actually wore then"
I see this commonly in movies and on TV all the time...can they never give you an actual feel for costumes? Or does the designer have to be an ass and do something stupid?
Or do they simply not know what they're doing?
I also recently looked at an article for some stupid upcoming movie in which all the characters were supposed to be some kind of hippies or something in the 60's...they all looked like they had WAY too much money and a stylist on top of that to be hippies, and one of them looked like a Jimi Hendrix reject.
Anyone have anymore gripes? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It irks me...I should design these clothes. |

but yeah, i like the clothes in period dramas. i don't know that much about the clothing of the time, other than what i've seen in said dramas, so if they're inaccurate i wouldn't know. i just like looking at clothes that are so unlike what we wear these days. it's interesting. |

| | | Menstruation clothing? Oh God.
Well, one of my complaints is that most average people cannot afford expensive fabrics...such as the ones used in TV's and movies. So for me, to be effective, one has to use more realistic fabrics, patterns, you name it.
Considering that people still made a lot of their clothing during that time period (early 20th century), I would think a lot of it would be simple.
But the hair and makeup matters a LOT. Pale was in, wavy hair, light makeup...people way overdo it. |

| | | Perhaps the designer wanted to put their own spin on the clothing.
Even in Gone With the Wind, Scarlett's clothing and hairstyles were definitely a little off. |

| | | I agree, although Scarlett's outfits were great, a lot about her wardrobe and hair was dated, in a modern kind of way. (Especially that red sequined dress, it could've been in any movie that came out that same year) | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
