Yeah try to eat alot more vegetables, fruits and lean meats and incorporate it with some exercise. Veggies etc are pretty cheap, in fact they are probably cheaper than brand name diet products like slimfast. Exercising doesn't have to cost you anything, if you can't afford to spend money then you could try walking/jogging/running all of which do not really cost anything.
If you have already bought the special k stuff etc then start with them for now but next time you go shopping spend what ever money you can afford on fresh foods. Make your meals yourself rather than buying pre-packaged ones because then you know what is really going in to it. There are alot of low fat dishes that can be made fairly easily...just google for some ideas
