Dahl.

Lentils rock because they are so cheap, and healthy.

Dahl rocks because it is so fucking yummy and cheap and healthy and goes for aaages.

anyone have a good dahl recipe?

thsi is my easy as daal recipe, i just use the individual spices that make up curry powder myself though, it makes a huge difference, and i always use brown lentils, usually tinned.

1/4 - 1/2 packet red or brown lentils
bring to the boil, then set aside
cut up and fry 1 or 2 brown onions
(i always use a clove or two of garlic and a little ginger in mine - because i don't use a curry powder)
add some curry powder, at least two tablespoons
(i use cumin, coriander - sometimes fresh - turmeric, fenugreek, pepper & salt. i never measure any of it, i usually use more cumin than anything else though) you can use some cloves, nutmeg, chili flakes and/or cardamom also
add a dash of lemon juice (or to taste) this isn't necessary but, i like to use it in mine because i feel it brings more out of the spices
add to lentils and stir
cook another 10 odd minutes

edit: i usually serve mine with couscous because i can't be bothered to make rice (takes so much longer!)

yesterday after a long workout i treated myself to some split pea dahl and brown rice and the vegetarian take away place down the street oh god it was divine.
