gym Memberships

Today I ended my gym membership with Fitness First. I was with them for about two years and went hardly ever. I was lucky to be paying a discounted price as I work for the NHS and the reason I never quit it before was because I kept saying to myself 'I will go tomorrow!' But I always felt too tired and unmotivated to go and since I have lost weight through yogalates I realise that i dont need the gym.

so the point of this thread is about gym memberships etc.
Do you use the gym?
are you a member of the gym but never go or do you go all the time?

have you ever had a bad experience with your gym memberships etc? not being able to end your contract? being forced to pay stupid amounts of money to them?

do you like the gym? I sure dont!

I love the gym, but unfortunately can't afford to pay for a membership at the minute. I was paying just shy of £32.50 a month at the one I used to go to, and I definitely got my money's worth. I used to go at least 3 times a week, but I had to cancel my contract when I came to uni because A) I was moving away and B) I couldn't afford it anyway. I didn't have any problems cancelling the contract whatsoever. I sent them a letter saying that I wanted to end my contract, they took my last payment and then that was that. I can't wait till I can get a membership somewhere again though. I felt much better when i was going to the gym regularly.

i probably wouldn't pay for a gym membership if i didn't get a discount through work. and luckily my discount is huge - i only pay $5 a month and it gets automatically deducted from my paycheck so it feels like not paying at all. i go 4 times a week and while i don't love going, i also don't love worrying about weight gain. so the trade-off is to bust ass at the gym regularly. i don't do anything overly ridiculously strenuous though so really it's not that bad. i run for 25 minutes and then do toning for 20 minutes.

My gym =

No membership fees, commute, waiting on equipment, takes up a small corner of the closet if that and damn effective.

Since I moved I've been signed up to the local council gym, mainly because it's easy to get to pay as-you-go/month upfront without any contract. The kit is a bit rubbish but I can't find anywhere better in reasonable travelling distance, my attendence is sporadic and it's not too busy in the times I tend to go. I tend to 'fall back' on going when I've got nothing else going on fitness-wise, I need to do something semi-regularly or I get tetchy.

I always check contracts, the first place I was ever signed up to I had to get out before my year was up and luckily they were't bastards and just made me pay 1/3rd of my remaining time. I've heard bad things about Virgin gyms doing bad and basically illegal things with renewing fixed contracts.
