Try a different gym? You get hardcore bodybuilding gyms with twat instructors like you describe, but there's surely also community/council gyms that people more normal people use and where gorilla types will be scarce. At least that's the case over here, if you can't find any in Pa-naaa-ma-nana (mana-mana) then you're admitting it's a backwards country after all.
I'm sorry but there's too much advice out there on weightlifting to take in, much of which is contradictory or near impossible to explain without being there, so you really need to join a gym to get the exercises right in the first place. The good news is if you're new to it you'll get a lot of noticable improvement in the first few months.
When the push-up routine gets easy for you, put your feet up on a chair and slow down the push-ups.
I should add that you don't grow when you're exercising, you grow at rest. Exercise just creates the breakdown condition so your body responds by becoming stronger.
Three supplements I would recommend are: A multivitamin, Magnesium and Brewer's Yeast. Everyday.
Also, being a worrying, neurotic mess is only going to serve to work against your gains, so chill out.
