so i would like to understand weight loss and diet better, and how it exactly works

like, the processes your body goes through internally, what works best, what doesnt work so well, and just generally i would like to understand the process a little more than i do.
i had lost weight by means of starvation and purging about two years ago, i actually lost a significant amount of weight. but i gained it all back. and a little more.
so basically im trying to do it the healthy way this time. you know, make a life style change etc. and i think understanding the process my body is going through will help me out a lot.
i know there are people here that are quite knowledgeable on this subject and probably could offer some advice.
so hit me with your best shot.

I'm interested in this too. All I ever hear people say is that you need "to burn more calories than you consume" and that's it.

But that seems fuckin impossible so alternatives???

Its not impossible! You just need to exercise to burn the calories and eat fewer calories so theres less to burn!
I like to enter all my food and exercise onto fitday.com then I can see what I have burnt off and what not.

Lol.

That's the ONLY way?!

Basically, you don't eat enough to supply you with the energy you need, so you burn fat (which is what you'd want) or muscle tissue (which is what you wouldn't want).

I've been reading about diets a bit and all the ones that advice you to cut something out (be it carbohydrates or fats) seem very unhealthy to me.

There's this book about speeding up your metabolism that basically tells you not to eat (products with) refined sugar, mostly whole grains (lots of fiber), protein sources that are not too fatty and mostly vegetable fats and then ration the portions you eat (exactly enough to keep you energised) and always combine carbohydrates with protein (so it takes longest to digest). For a workout they recommend lifting weights to build muscle mass (more muscle means you burn more calories) and cardio to burn calories. There's a lot more to it, but these are the basics. They're also not too uptight about having a small snack now and then.

To me, this seems like an extremely healthy way of loosing weight.

Good luck!

EDIT: I don't know if this works yet. I've just started. I want to lose 5-7 kg (11-15 pounds) (approximately at least, I don't use a scale. I judge by how I look, feel and how my clothes fit) and do a lot of dancing (read:jumping and running around the room while wiggling my ass) and yoga everyday. Wanna start a support thread?

Food combining - like Suzanne Sommers says put the right foods together. She wrote a book about it.

Also the better metabolism will come from a staple diet. Thats right staples have lots of iron. No try picking a few nutrient dense foods to eat when you need a snack. The less you stimulate your taste buds with sweets and wild assortments of flavors the better your appetite will settle.

More spices the better. Thats why indian food is really good for you with all the curry and spices. And Mexican. Some spices benefit the circulation which is better for oxygen to get to your cells. And garlic its one of the better spices. I like it in hummus cause its stilly raw.

i read yesterday that cinnamon and ginger are both excellent for your metabolism.

im big on jalepenos and hot sauce. i can literally put them on anything. ive noticed if i do its not half as bad when i slip up and eat things im not supposed to. im the type of girl that can bloat just by looking at pizza. but if im eating jalepenos every day i dont gain any weight from it at all.

I drink ginger tea every morning, its the only thing that gets my poor circulation going (its pretty bad for someone who hasn't got a car and walks everywhere) it's also got cloves and other pungent spices but also with apple and pu-ehr tea, the latter infamous as a weight loss tea.
Couldn't live without it.
here's a site with the one I get.
Birt & Tang Herbal Ginger Tea 20 bags

Look at what's in your fridge and cabinet.
Take away anything tempting otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure..
I have to live on a day to day basis where there's only enough food in the house for one day and I have to go out and get more the next. It's pretty extreme but its the only thing stopping me from getting fat fat these days. I'm just trying to stay under a BMI of 25 which is appropriate as any doctor will tell me.

You got to want to aswell, any weakness in your resolve and well.....its like quitting ciggies in the way that you got to "want to." Remind yourself why everyday you want to.

This is also true, try and eat more plain food, to reduce msg/sugar cravings.

Do more cooking at home and less fast foods.
Cut out all soda pop, its not that addictive so just stick with unsweetened warm tea and water.

Buy some small weights, there are special ones to carry while walking. They are pretty light put I use them also as regular weights by repeptitavely using them over a period of time rather than big heavy ones for 15 minutes.

oh yeah, lol, I like that "the Wall" flowers are back in the avie.

eat little and often. and only things with a lower gi. this reduces hunger pangs from blood sugar swings.

increase your metabolism, that is your basal metabolic rate, by strength type exercises, weights etc.

burn calories with aerobic exercise.

nearly everything else is bullshit and snake oil

It's easy to burn more calories than you consume, keeping in mind that the average body has to burn over 1200 calories a day just to keep you alive! So you're burning calories even when you're doing nothing. The amount of calories a person burns at rest is dependant on their height and weight. You can calculate your daily needs here:

To lose weight, I would recommend you stick to a high-fibre diet, drink lots of water and exercise. Fibre is good for weight loss because the body doesn't digest it, which means it doesn't contribute to your caloric intake. It goes right through you without being absorbed by the body, and works as a sort of "flush" to help the passage of waste out of the body. It is important we have fibre in our diet to avoid intestinal residue and "keep things clean". It also makes you feel full, so you don't eat as much.

You need to keep your metabolism up. Exercise and water is the way to go about this. The rate at which your body burns calories depends on how high or low your metabolism is. Drinking lots of water is essential for keeping your metabolism up. In fact, dehydration will slow down one's metabolism by as much as 3%. A brisk walk in the morning is good to get your metabolism going for the day. Caffeine is recommended for people who are trying to lose weight because it speeds up the metabolism. Don't think that drinking loads of coffee is a good idea because while it speeds up the metabolism it also contains calories. Try green tea instead. It has been reported that you can burn 70 extra calories by drinking just three cups of green tea a day.

oh i pretty much live on green tea. not even for the calorie burning effects but because i just love it. i only drink green tea that i brewed myself though, because then i can put stevia in it instead of artificial sweeteners and sugars.
and thanks for everyones advice.
if you guys think of anything more let me know.

ive been eating spicy foods everyday and ive noticed that im actually losing more weight this way. i put cayenne and jalepenos on everything. ive been eating a lot of black beans and rice because i hear that is one of the best protein/carb combinations. so far so good.
