An Ironman Triathalon a month

So i stole this from another board. I think it would be neat for whomever wants to try, to complete an ironman triathalon each month.

Swim - 4200 Yards (approx 2.3 miles)
Bike - 112 miles (indoor or outdoor)
Run - 26.2 miles (treadmill, road, elliptical)

I figured I can do it if I break it up small enough. I'm going to try at least.

Mon - 2 miles run
Tues - 550 yard swim, 2 miles run
Wed - strength training class, 14 miles bike
Thurs - 500 yard swim, 2 miles elliptical
Fri - strength train class, 14 miles bike

and twice in the month add on an extra mile of running.

I know there is a good chance I will fail the first few months, but eventually I'll get it. Who's with me?

i talked with a nurse who works with me who has trained for marathons and she suggested that i add one more exercise at a time, so i'm going to only add swimming right now., and if i bike, it will sub for one of my three days of elliptical/treadmill

mon - elliptical
tues - ellip and swim
wed - strength training
thurs - ellip and swim
friday - strength training.

ill keep that for a few weeks and see how i do. i know i can do 550 yards at a time. or rather, i would be very surprised if i couldnt. i was on the swim team in high school adn have off and on used swimming as my primary exercise. my muscles will remember it quickly.

12 marathons a year wouldn't be recommended would it? And then with all that other stuff before it...
Or is that only for top athletes who actually want to be really good at them?

people run 26 mile weeks all the time, which means four marathons a month. for general fitness. im reducing the amount of running but expanding other forms of fitness. look at the daily amounts of exercise; it's not that much really.

i think this would be a great challenge for alot of people, and others might think this paltry, like im sure MFC can do this with his eyes closed yawning.

I know that people clock up loads of miles, I just wasn't sure about competing so many times. I guess it's only if you want to run super fast times every time that you should limit how often you run marathons/enter ironmans [sic?]

I used to work in a bike shop, and most of the guys in there would push to do one or two Ironmans per year.

Bear in mind, as well as all the usual stress and strain, an Ironman will fuck your knees up like you wouldn't believe. Lots of cycling is bad enough, but coupled with a marathon, you can do some pretty brutal damage if you're not careful.

Can people not just settle for epic wanking on Sunday afternoons any more?

Apparently not. They're so selfish.

Sorry. Confused. I figured the break-up was the training.

i love cycling and would love to get to the big miles all in one go, not spread out. currently i cycle about 15 miles three times a week. swimming i've just started and am a weakling at. i will not run though, my knees are too precious

i don't like exercises when you just stand there or sit there, except weights, but they don't take long.

im jealouZ that you get to go out into the wild and bike. i want to do that with running and biking. for now, because i need to exercise, this is what i do. also its not bad if i can zone out with ipod and crap television in front of me. AND i really enjoy looking at how many calroies im burning at that moment and how fast im going and what my heart rate is and where i am in the program for the machine e.g .cascading hills and so on. it occupies me and quells my compulsive nature

but nothing beats running your heart out (or biking) out in the woods or night city streets.

except sex

i wish the weather was good enough for biking outside. too icy, though. my first thought (without, obviously, actually thinking) was "oh, but i could just take the bus instead!". weeeeell. i don't know. would i still be iron man?

fuck it, i'm up

i'll have to substitute the biking, though. and maybe the running too, if we suddenly get a lot of snow, but it'll stay for now. so i suppose i'll be less ironman and more like... i don't know... ferrous alloy woman?

so. plan.

running:
26.2 miles is 42.16 km. that is roughly 8 5k runs. it’s really a bit more, but i’ll be running on the road (don’t have gym access), so the distances won’t be too accurate anyway. maybe i’ll measure up 2160 meters and do a victory lap at the end of the month if i actually get the rest done (ha!).

swimming:
because the entrance tickets to the pool are expensive as fuck, i’ll simply be trying to get the distance down in as few parts as possible. get in, swim until the have to fish me out of the pool, go home.

bike substitute: mountainside stairclimbing:
800-ish steps up the side of the mountain behind my house. 313 meter height difference between start and top, pretty steep, guaranteed jello legs and nice buzz at the top (plus a nice hike back down the mountain). distance doesn’t really work here, so i’ll simply say 8 times. the biking would have been split like that, twice a week on average, so i think it’s an ok substitute.

can i just say... this is possibly the most insane thing ever, k. have you counted your marbles lately?

it’s the good kind of insane, though. i know i need it, at least. if i gain 5 pounds, i will officially be the fattest i have ever been in my whole life. that is just not a very cool record.

i’ve been reading this blog a lot lately, and got really inspired, so i just bought new fancy gore tex waterproof running shoes the other day. fuck the weather (because that’s really what’s holding me back, har har), i need to get OUT.

i also like the aspect that even if you haven't finished everything at the end of the month, you still have a measurable result. that way you never really "fail" (unless you did nothing. then you failed. sorry.), and you can compete with yourself to improve your monthly result. so the goal can be not to finish the ironman perfectly by month #1, but maybe by summer/within the year/before retirement age/whatever.

indie! i swear to god, and i should have mentioned it, but i thought specifically of you when making this thread nad wished you were still here. <3 and here you are.

ok its you and me.

i ran on a treadmill twice and as a result now have bursitits of the right hip and mild mild shin splint on the left leg. so im going to go it mostly elliptical for the "running" part. but i ran a mile and a half the second time without stopping (first ran a mile) and only stopped because i could feel my hip give way and it was sorta scary.

tomorrow im going to swim at least 550 yards. i would love to to it a 1000 yards at a time. that way i only have to swim once a week. getting dressed up and then taking off the suit in a public locker room isnt my idea of a stress free time.

so ill do the elliptical and swim tomorrow and friday i do strength training at 11am so early i need to get up and spin.

IM SO EXCITED
