| | Let's Talk Gym Memberships? i am looking into getting a gym membership (HAR HAR YES I KNOW IM A FATTY, HENCE WHY I'M FIXING IT.)
& i am having a hard time deciding where to go.
ideally, 24 Hr Fitness, is not only the closest. but works with my hours. however, it's tragically expensive. TRAGICALLY. does anyone know if trainers come with your already fkn expensive membership? or do i have to pay extra b/c i will really shit my pants.
secondly, Gold's Gym is next. only for convenience. i've heard nothing but bad reviews about this place, except from ONE of my good friends. but it's right down the street. the hours aren't as good as 24 hrs, and the trainers ARE NOT free. not to mention the prices aren't that cheap either.
next is a locally owned & operated gym called Powerhouse, which... is WAY the fuck in timbuckfuckingtoo, but is cheaper. i'm not really sure on their trainer situation (which is essential - b/c i need to motivation to do the shit right, if i'm going to do it) & it's so far away the costs in gas make the cheap membership pretty much the same as the other two.
i won't mention the last option b/c i don't think i could work out with old ladies. so curves is out.
can anyone give me any experiences from either of these (obviously not the locally owned & operated one - but if you go to local gym, you can add your shit here)
i did not thread search so sue me if this has already been talked about.
but help bigz out <3 |

| | | okay first of all - YOU"RE NOT A FATTY
so stop that.
you're fucking gorgeous.
i think it's a good idea to try and negotiate like a shorter term joining fee first - like 6 months, and then maybe an option to extend?
they really want you to join up with them, so it's worth to try and work something out - joining for 12 months is a real commitment so i would be like hmmm lets try something shorter first.
just an idea. i joined a gym once but only went three times, so i'm probably not much help. |

| | | i'm a god damn fatty.
srsly.
now. i've decided to do the 24 hr fitness. b/c i get a 99 dollar initiation. + first & last months dues. but i also get 5 personal training sessions. which, i guess is all they offer unless you're rich anyway. so. i guess i didn't need any of your help anywayz. guys. thanks a lot.
unless someone comes in here in the next few days and is like 24 Hr Fitness SUX. & HERES WHY.
b/c so far it's got the most pros.
i once got a lifetime membership @ a locally owned gym. but, i was so grossed out at their pool water (it was like swimming IN sweat) that i never went back. ever. |

| | | Good on you for wanting to get fitter and healthier. I've been doing this for the past 14 months and have been feeling great.
Seriously, I don't diet at all (I am veggie though so I do have to be careful about combining proteins) and I dropped a clothes size and my face is smaller and all sorts of cool shit (not near my goal but I'm heaps healthier and stronger and slowly getting better and flexibility and strength) and all if it was form going to the gym.
I can't give you experienc eon those gyms but i can recommend this:
Get a bunch of free trials form them. Ask them for a week or so to say that you're not sure if its the place for oyu and you'd like to know what its like ot work out there.
I did this last year and from there I worked out which gym i liked the best. One thing I worked out was I wanted to be somewhere walking distance so I didn' thave to stand out in the cold waiting for the late trams and this way I could use my walk as a partial warm up. I was lucky enough to score 30 day passes so that was the best.
Do you know of anyone on an internet community (like LJ) in your area who are members who might be able to say "my friend wants to try this place can you get her a pass", which might help, thats how I got one of them.
a few things:
unlike this horrible chain form the UK which is allover Oz called fitness first which doesn't do this, all the good ones will give you a free program. Don't sign up with a gym that makes you have to pay for jsut showign you how to use the machines and give you a 6 week program to keep you on track. (of course personal trainers will cost but this is a standard gym thijng to give all their members an induction and personal program they can follow themselves.
look for the ratio of members to equipment, by going on a free trial for a week you will see if there are just too many people at the times you want to go and whether its suitable for you.
you want a clean gym, with equipment that isn't fraying. classes where the instructors will help give newbies modifcations for the moves.
oops i gotta head to the gym, stand by for part two but those are the basics to look out for.

| | | oh yeah...best time to sign up for a gym is usually towards the end of the mnth when they want their sales figures up so they will usually waive the joining fee. try and bargain with them over that and make sure they dont' lock you into long term contracts. they can be sneaky buggers.
i ended up going to the local council gym - i don't like commercial gyms and the sales high pressure tactics and this one has a pool, spa and sauna, of which i've not used but the atmosphere is great and the staff are helpful, if they see you not using something right they will help you so you dont' injuge yourself.
