| Eating disorders- your perceptions? I realize that threads like these have probably been done, I did a search and came up with about 5 pages of threads about eating disorders. I'm really sorry I don't feel like wading through all of those to figure out which one is most similar, someone let me know if there is one please?
First of all, some background on why I'm doing this thread: I have a friend with an eating disorder and I never suspected it at all until she committed herself to a hospital for care. She is a strong feminist type & was always very vocal that people should be comfortable with their bodies. For some reason, I assumed people like this didn't get eating disorders. Since that happened (about 3 years ago) my perceptions have changed somewhat. I feel like I never know for sure who around me might be struggling.
Also, the lovely onewaynotgrrl posted a pic in the April photo thread that made her look as though she was bordering on anorexia. I don't think she has an eating disorder at all, but I do think that picture made her look like someone who might have one. I know it's all angles and whatnot because I've seen other pics of her where she looks perfectly healthy. Hollywood stars have this same problem I think- people take pics of them from a certain angle and it makes them look anorexic (or close to) and the tabloids have a field day. Obviously some of them are anorexic, but not all of them.
So here's what I want to know: have you ever found out someone you know has an eating disorder? Did you suspect it at all beforehand?
Also, for those who have eating disorders or have people "accusing" them of having eating disorders- does it bother you if people tell you that you look anorexic? Does having one or being accused of having one cause you any shame? Have you told anyone (e.g. your best friend) or do you hide it carefully from everyone?
Just so you know, I don't think it should cause any shame and I understand people hide things like this for more reasons than that. I also wonder if it's offensive when people call you anorexic? |
