| | | You should eat something like a jam sandwhich on wholemeal bread to give you a slow sugar release but you can have a glucose tablet to perk you up immediately. I deal with people with diabetes and have seen them go unconcious from low blood sugar and you need something as an immediate rush and then a slow release to maintain a normal level. |

| | | you can prevent it altogether by eating properly.
I have borderline hypoglycemia ( low blood sugar). I, too, get cranky, tired, dizzy, and have insane sugar cravings when my sugar has been irregular for weeks on end.
I was told i need to eat at least 400 calories for breakfast each day. Most people dpnt have time to eat a balanced breakfast. I dont have time for more than a bowl of cereal. But if i eat apples or bananas as a snack between meals and eat natural foods ( no fried, fast food crap) i dont have a problem.
Eating things like candy bars and chips wont solve your problem. Foods like those give sugar bursts then your crash ( your levels drop again). It is more about proper diet than fast snack fixes. |

| | | Like Angelglo said, it's good to avoid sugar-filled foods if you have low
blood sugar or borderline. My doctor told me to try high protein small
meals several times a day. Don't let your stomach go empty if you can
help it. I sometimes drink ensure when I don't feel much like eating. |

| | | i'm hypoglyceamic also, and i tend to carry around a bag of chocolate covered raisins or nuts. the chocolate boosts your sugar level pretty quickly, and the fruit sustains it.
just a suggestion for a snack, if you're suffering from extreme low blood sugar. |

| | | ah yes, the perils of hypoglycemia. I'm a sufferer and it's a real bitch.
You can control the lows by eating properly - balance protien with a carb and fiber. fiber is really the key - it takes longer to break down in your stomach, so if you eat fiber with protien, your blood sugar levals will stay higher, longer.
Breakfast is also the most important - my nutritionist says to eat within one hour of waking up. Like a peanut butter sandwich (on whole wheat, of course) with some fruit - pears, apples and such. I was told to stay away from bananas because they break down into sugar so quickly. Or you could use one in a fruit smoothy - just be sure to add lots of protien powder.
Eating often is important. Try eating some almonds with a cheese wedge and some crackers. Or fruit and cheese, or beans and rice, or a half a sandwich. Some sort of protein, carb, fiber mixture. Otherwise you are in a constant battle with blood sugar spikes and then crashes, which really suck.
Save the orange juice, fruit juice and other crap for an emergency fix - and then get yourself to a turkey (or tofu) sandwich in short order.
I'm learning to control it, but it's all about eating correctly. And not drinking too much caffeine, which can exacerbate your sympotms terribly.
Not as much fun as a snickers bar I know, but eating right is really the only way to stave off the eventual diabetes - which is even worse!
Good luck! |

| | | Like Anne says, protein is the key. When I get the between-meals shakes, I usually have a piece of cheese and that calms me down. It really does come down to learning to eat healthy and coping with your sugar cravings. No way around it. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
