| | | sun-dried tomatoes I stood looking at a jar of them in olive oil for five minutes last night at Safeway..and then I put it back down, because it occured to me I have no idea what to do with sun dried tomatoes.
What (if anything) do you do with your sun-dried tomatoes? Do you get them in olive oil or dried? The dried ones said you need to blanch them for ten minutes before using - that sounded like a bit too much bother. I was thinking of putting them on a sandwhich or somesuch.
Tell me your thoughts on sun dried tomatoes.

| | | oh I love them~You should deffinately get the ones in olive oil. Dried ones are icky. They work great in salads, you should chop em up a bit though. And also on sandwiches, especially with mozarella! You could also add them to pasta sauces, and I make this aubergine spread which has sundried tomatoes in it, and its great.
Anyway, just buy em! |

| | | I was a little worried about the olive oil tho.. they're not all gross and oily are they? Maybe I could pat them down with a paper towel to remove some of the oil. sun dried tomatoes + mozzarella sounds heavenly right now.
gelflinggirl - I don't really cook much lately - well not from scratch, I tend to use premade jars of pasta sauce, ect.. but I could definately throw them into a lot of sauces and other dishes.
any particular brand you get?

| | | I usually put em on a bit of paper towel to drain most of the oil, then thei're not greasy at all. Yeah, I chuck em into pre-made tomato sauce whenever I dont make a sauce from scratch |

| | | I like em over pizza and that is it. They are way to strong and pungent. They usually take over the flavor any dish and I don't like that. You eat them on a sandwich with turkey, well it turns into a sundried tomato sandwich instead. Gross. They do taste okay blended with mayo or other things to make spreads. |

| | oooo i always have sundried tomatos
i put them in pasta sauces, pizza, sandwiches, with brie & yummy cheeses on crackers, in salads.. pretty much everything. I have overdone it a bit the past year though and i'm taking a break from them.
The olive oil & the dried ones are good, i get the ones with olives, herbs & feta from the deli.
that is when i actually have money |

| | i've never had the dried ones.
i love the semi-dried and sun-dried ones.
they go well with avocado, fresh 'smoked' salmon, cream cheese on a crispbread.
you can blend them up with some tomato puree and use as a super-tasty pizza base (much better than plain old pre-made pizza base topping)...or just add to the pizza topping. very yummmy!
add them to a sammich, BLTs taste so much better when using these instead of fresh. cause they are super-tasty and go well with the bacon...and a smidgin of mayo... |

| | This thread is making me hungry as hell now. I'm going to go buy some this afternoon, and I shall report back I'm craving a turkey and avocado sandwhich, and I'm going to add some to it and see how it is.

any particular brand you get? | olive oil is good for you ! well mainkly if its extra virgin olive oil
i love it in a fresh baguette with brie. droooool
you cna put it in pizaza have it in pasta with some parmesan and garlic
or make a more elabtorate sauce but the italians are into simplicity and sun dried matoes are rich
you can make salad with them, perhaps with rocket and basil and brie or ricotta cheese or fetta cheese |

| | | I use them with hummos a lot. I mix them in my pasta sauce (jar) with fresh garlic and artichoke hearts and spices. I sometimes put them on a greek salad with calamata olives. THey are good on crusty bread or crackers with goat cheese. |

| | | Oh I don't mind the sodium - I naturally have really low blood pressure, always have - and I love salt. It's more the oil that was worrying me, as I try to watch what I eat nowadays.. but I guess if I pat the excess off it should be ok. You all have given me a million ideas what to do with them - I'm going to buy some tomorrow when I go grocery shopping.
ema I've never seen nor heard of the fat free ones - tho they might have them in the gourmet grocery here.. this is San Francisco, you can get anything here if it's healthy.
