| | yeah, i'm interested in it as well. specifically how to do it healthily, minus 'fake' meat (i.e. tofu, etc.)
how can you get enough calcium without eating dairy? |

| | actually, nature's richest source of calcium is sesame seeds.
But also, a handful of dried figs will give you about half of your daily necessity.
Here is something I copied from a website: Quote:
There are many plant-based sources of calcium. Good sources include non-oxalate (see below) dark green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale, spring greens, cabbage, bok choy, parsley and watercress. Also rich in calcium are dried fruits, such as figs and on one piece of toast or stirred into a bowl of soup) dates, nuts, particularly almonds and brazil nuts, and seeds including sesame seeds and tahini (sesame seed paste) which contains a massive 680 milligrams of calcium per 100 grams.
Pulses including soya beans, kidney beans, chick peas, baked beans, broad beans, lentils, peas and calcium-set tofu (soya bean curd) provide a good source of calcium. Other fruit and vegetable sources include parsnips, swede, turnips, lemons, oranges, olives and molasses. A good additional source is calcium-enriched soya milk.
| Here is the rest of that article about calcium: http://www.vivausa.org/health/calciumfactsheet.html
And my favorite vegan resource ever is vegan outreach: http://www.veganoutreach.org/index.html
Their article about calcium: http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/bones

also, tofu isn't really like fake meat. tofu can be used to make fake meats (like not bacon etc *shudder*) but it can also be put in stirrfries etc and it's not really like fake meat at all... it's a thing all of its own.

| | | ive tried vegan cheese and it grosses me out. a lot. i do eat a lot of fake meat, like boca and morningstar farms stuff. tofu is ehhh to me. i can eat it in certain things but in other things the consistancy makes me gag. i tried to eat it in some chinese stir fry last week and it was so gross.
i loveeeeeeeeee cheese. i really want to do this but it feels impossible. |

I'm not even sure craving is the right word. My body didn't crave it so much as I loved the taste and wanted it. But after thinking the way I have for so many years I don't think I could ever knowingly eat cheese again. It grosses me out. All dairy does in fact. I don't consider eggs dairy and they don't gross me out as much as proper dairy food. The only cheating I have done is I had wedding cake at my sister's wedding and my cousin's wedding. But I know many vegans cheat and that's really ok. I think it's the mindset that you must be "pure" that stops so many people from being vegan or staying vegan. Just do the best you can. Anything helps. It's not a quest for purity, its just trying to do the least damage possible.

Its the cheese and ice cream and chocolate that are murdering me |

| | | I LOVE soy ice cream. It is one million and one time better than the milk stuff where you can taste every bit of animal fat in it. It makes me feel so sick.
Soy cheese though. ew. I tried it once and hated it. and I liked soy yoghurt at first but got sick of it, it's kind of sweet in a sickly way. You can buy vegetarian cheese here but that just means that it doesn't have calf stomach in it. I actually think it tastes much better than the regular stuff.
This is why I can't be a vegan. I am just too fussy. So Jaded, I feel your pain. |
