Either that or gmail hates me. Something definitely hates me.
Try as I may, I just cannot get Outlook Express to connect to my gmail account. I've tried using the auto configuration tool
here with no success, and have also tried the manual steps laid out there. I enabled POP for my gmail account. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here. Everytime I open Outlook Express, it looks like it is trying to connect but I always get a timeout message as follows:
A time-out occurred while communicating with the server. Account: '*******@gmail.com', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error number: 0x800CCC19
I have it set to timeout after two minutes. Is this reasonable? Is it possible that checking mail just takes much longer?
Now I've searched for the error number mentioned above and I've found numerous sites telling me that it is a possible corruption of the pop3uidl file, whatever that may be. Most sites suggest deleting the file, but I'm not about to delete something when I don't even know what it does.
I also read on the Microsoft site that it may be due to my anti virus program (Norton Internet Security). I've gone into that and turned off the scanning of incoming and outgoing emails. Still nothing.
Any ideas on the way forward? I can access my email just fine through a browser, obviously, but I'd rather do it in Outlook.
