Dumb question: is it possible

To have completely separate iTunes accounts on the same computer?

This is a computer that will be retired soon, but I have a huge amount of audio books on CD that are in my iTunes account that I don't want to lose. I have an ancient 1st generation ipod that works perfectly, but only has less than 4 GB. I have always checked/unchecked what I needed during syncing and all has been well. My sister in law wants to sync her new ipad2 to the computer.

Is there an easy way to move my iTunes library? Will it involve buying an external hard drive? I am prepared to do that, but want to know how difficult moving an entire iTunes library from one laptop to another, without moving another iTunes library as well.

I'd like to think that I am mildly tech savvy, but in truth, I am not. I remember the days of VCRs with a remote attached by a cable and answering machines with a mini-cassette. High tech back then was being able to call your corded home phone and dial a code to listen to your answering machine messages. You had to sit on the line and wait/listen to the machine to rewind and then listen to all of the messages.

I had a large library of audio books that I had bought and have since donated that I would like the option of relistening to.

Please help!

Additionally, a third iTunes account may come into play. Is there a way to successfully do this?

Also, I have an iPad 2 that I would like to be able to sync to my old desktop account iTunes on a new, completely separate laptop.

Ultimately, we are talking about an ancient desktop with my ancient iTunes account that is going to need a new and separate iTunes account for my SIL. She is buying a MAC desktop and I have a new lap top. How do I move my iTunes from a desktop to my laptop? How does she move her iTunes from a PC to a Mac?

I am so confused. Please help!

Skyy,

Never use Windows, Mac, or iTunes. But, what I used to do, for a friend, was to locate the 'folder' where all the tunes have been turned from mp3's, to iPod format tunes.

Once you have that folder, you can copy all the tunes to an external USB Stick. They are cheaper than a external hard drive, and come in 16GB/32GB Varieties. That might not be enough, depending on exactly how many files you have in the folder.

As for using different accounts. That is a good idea. Because, last time I looked, iTunes limited the amount of different PC's you can use the same account on.

Do a google search for 'iTunes music format extension' and see what you need to search the folders for...it would be a search string similar to *.mp3 (use the asterisk, that is the wild card search pattern) but it will not be .mp3, it will be something else. That is why you have to search for the iTunes music format extension. Then, when you have that, search for *.xxx replacing the .xxx with the extension for the iTunes music format.

Jesus, that was long!

Thank you Xander, I appreciate your reply. But it did not answer my initial question.
