i downloaded seasons one and two of true blood, plus the new episodes. never got this warning. plus i download showtime, porn, cable and network tv shows, feature films, etc. all on roadrunner (with that turbo boost thing). sounds like maybe thumbscrew and peterk may be on the right track.

when i told you to google i just mean i dont think KR has the answer you really want, and youre the one who got the warning. i think other people online are better qualified to help you and my quick google searches that i did for you weren't very clear. i tried to find that economist article but i forget what it was called and it wasn't easy to find by searching their site. anyway i hope you dont get cut off!

i use transmission for my BT client.

So, my advice - go old school on their asses and use FTP! Or a HTTP downloads only. That is what I do and I've downloaded 4.5GB of data at once without getting disconnected. (It was a GNU/LINUX DVD via FTP)
You haven't "outwitted the system", they just haven't in the past really given a **** in the UK. I have downloaded somewhere between 300-400GB, actually probably more like 500-600GB, of data over the past 10 years on a variety of P2P file shares, including entire TV series, movies, albums etc. Done this on a variety of providers (Tiscali, BT, O2, talktalk) and haven't even had a warning. They are trying to muster the energy to give a **** in the UK but they haven't yet.

If you download like 4GB in one go, even through the http port, your ISP will most likely smack you down with their fair usage policy anyway, and cap your speed if you persist. So that's kind of pointless advice anyway, unless you only do that **** in the wee hours of the morning. I think few (if any) providers don't have a FUP now. In the UK I mean.

i don't understand why people download anything.

i do use piratebay.org occassionally, but only if i'm stealing something i read about on pitchfork. which makes it ok.
